COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed broadly in the Belgian saison (or sezoens) farmhouse ale style, Brooklyn Flemish Gold is a dry, hoppy, spicy beer with a distinctive American twist. Flemish Gold is brewed from German pilsener malt and brewer’s sugar, bittered with German Perle hops, aromatized in the kettle with Czech Saaz hops, and fermented to flinty dryness by a Belgian ale yeast. Then we dry-hop the beer with Glacier (a relatively new hop in the Fuggle family) from the Pacific Northwest. Served unfiltered, Flemish Gold has a bright, fresh hop aroma, an orangey spiciness from our special top-fermenting yeast, a racy, refreshing palate, and a snappy finish.

UPDATED: SEP 21, 2008 Growler from Bierkraft - well, she sure pours nice - cloudy gold, with a frothy, well-sustained head - a lot of orange and lemon zest in the aroma, as well as some ginger, and a strong mix of wildflowers - this is quite nice at first, but after a while it starts to remind one of expensive soaps - a bit of cobweb/earthiness in the mix keeps it interesting, though - the flavor is quite dry, almost dusty, with peppery hops, lemony character, and some zesty, spicy notes late - I long for some mild sweetness to balance these characteristics, but it remains quite dry - there is some phenolic character and a wheaty tang through the middle - much like the aroma, there is a rustic, earthy quality to the flavor that adds a nice dimension - lingering peppery flavor on the tongue - I would like a little bready malt to balance the dryness, but this is a nice beer none-the-less (update, sort of - I’m halfway through the growler, and now that my palate has adjusted to the dryness, this comes across like a hoppy saison - I still want more malt character to balance it, but the hoppiness is quite nice).

Bierkraft growler. Pours a cloudy golden with a bumpy white head. Doughy, yeasty aroma with some dusty straw and lemony noble hops. I picked up on a slight and odd saltiness as well as a mild funk. Flavor of bready malts that have very little sweetness at first, but rather more of a cracker/pretzely dryness. Some mild sweetness does evolve after a while in the glass, which also leads to a more noticeable light citrus/dusty noble hoppiness in the finish (Saaz?). Medium to full bodied with gentle carbonation. Wasn’t this one supposed to be brewed with Brett? If so, I haven’t picked up on much, except maybe a splinter of dry barnyard railing on the aroma. Overall a pretty good addition to the "Brewmaster Series," of Belgian style ales, even if it seems formulaic and conservative.
