COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Worshipful Company of Brewers, brewer #7: Jimmy Valm
Fourteen years ago when I began home-brewing I never thought I’d work for the Brooklyn Brewery. But after leaving Seattle, getting a brewing degree in Scotland, and working for Heineken in England making Foster’s on an industrial scale, I got the chance of a lifetime. Almost a year later and not only am I brewing some of the best beers around, but now I’ve been given the chance to design my own to add to that collection. I’ve always loved rye ales, but never took the time to make one of my own, and it turned out neither has the Brooklyn Brewery. Killing two birds with one stone never felt so right. And it wouldn’t have happened without all the creative, fun, hard-working, and slightly deranged people you find at the Brooklyn Brewery. I hope you all enjoy I Wanna Rye It! as much as I enjoyed brewing it.

Pours hazy mahogany with low white head. Aroma of rye, caramel, light grapefruit. Taste is rye and medium pine bitter up front followed by a lingering grapefruit bitterness in the finish. Light and smooth body with soft carbonation.

Not quite hoppy enough to be a rye ipa, and perhaps a little unfocused. a little bitterness and sweetness and rye spice. OK overall, but again, nothing I’d get again.

Sample at Daily Growler UA. Pours a slightly hazy deep amber color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily to a film. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, fruit and hops. Medium body with flavors of rye malt, fruit and earthy hops. The finish is caramel malt and subtle rye. Decent overall.

Draught @ BBB. Pours clear amber with a frothy offwhite head that leaves some sparse thick trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly malty and slightly fruity with rye bread, caramel, grapefruit juice, mango, freshly cut grass, pine needles, chives, green peas, moist soil and lemon zest. Taste is tiny sweet, slightly bitter, slightly malty and tiny fruity. Mouthfeel is tiny dry, astringent and light to medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and bitter with rye bread, caramel, grapefruit juice, unripe tropical fruits, moist grass, pine needles, chives, green peas, moist soil, minerals, orange peal and lemon zest. Too heavy on the green chlorophyll green pea hop character.

Alengrin (4329) - BELGIUM - NOV 16, 2015
Rye IPA from Brooklyn, with lightly lacing, moussy, pale beige head and hazy copper colour. Attractive aroma of marmelade, pink grapefruit flesh, toasted onion, soggy rye bread, mango. Tropical fruits in the onset, mango, passion fruit, lychee, supple mouthfeel with soft carbo, bit oily, caramelly with a ’deep’ rye sourishness and spiciness but elegantly so, lovely finish of aromatic and bittering hops, citrusy, spicy yet gentle, well in balance with juicy maltiness. Lovely beer.

Tap at Ashley’s. Aroma is very fruity surprisingly. Black cherry, rye bread, apples, pears, and peaches. Tastes like cereal sweetness and fruit. Almost like a dubbel. Apples, cherries and pears mostly. Big bready finish. Medium to full body. Odd beer.

on tap at the brewery june 2015. Red light brown, firm head. Loads of rye in the aroma, slight hint of pine. Palate is fairly dry, a bit rye heavy, long bitter finish. Nice for a rye IPA.

On tap at MacGregg’s. Clear golden beer with a nice avg. white head with lace. Hoppy citrus aroma, grassy, floral, rye, herbal, hay and some lemongrass. The flavor is much the same with grapefruit, caramel and grainy notes.

Rake. Keg. Lightly hazy amber beer, small cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry and as a good fine crispness. Decent rye spice blends well with the toffee streaked malts. Mild dried fruits. A burst of fruity sherbet. A spicy carbonated bite to finish. Interesting, tasty and very drinkable.
