Commercial Description:
Winter’s getting pretty old, isn’t it? Well, springtime is on the way, and we think it’s time to perk up. As strange as it may seem, coffee is intricately entwined with the story of modern stouts. Until the 1700’s, most dark beers were smoky in flavor – the malts were dried over wood fires. It was the development of coffee roasting technology that soon allowed brewers to achieve clean roasted flavors in their malts. It’s not surprising that the fruit and roast notes in fine coffees meld perfectly with roasted malt flavors. For our coffee we went directly to the ultimate source, Duane Sorenson of the famous Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Stumptown originally hails from Portland, Oregon, but they’ve just started roasting in Red Hook, Brooklyn also, and we’re pleased to welcome them to the neighborhood. We’ve brewed the beer with solid British and American malts, and then “intensified” our stout with Duane’s Guatemalan Full City roast beans, giving the beer a wonderfully complex coffee aroma and flavor.

This beer pairs beautifully with burgers, venison, duck, desserts, and….ummm…brunch. Yeah, you bet. So if winter’s tired you out, try Brooklyn Intensified Coffee Stout. It’s a stimulus package we can all believe in.

Malts: British Pale Ale, Crystal and Chocolate malts, American black malt and black barley
Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi
Hops: Willamette
Intensification: Stumptown Guatemalan Full City Roast Coffee Beans
O.G.: 18.8° Plato (1076)
ABV: 8.0%

Draft at Coles in Buffalo. Pours near black with a tan head. Loads of coffee in the aroma, with roasted malt, espresso, and a bit of sweetness. The flavor also has coffee, roast, and espresso. Not wham bam in your face, but very mellow, balanced, and drinkable. Finishes with a nice roasty and hoppy bitterness. Very good, better than Black Ops.

Served on tap at Ginger Man (NYC). I was very pleasantly surprised by this beer. Poured black with a thin tan/brown head. Flavor of roasted malts, coffee, and chocolate. Excellent creamy taste, huge amounts of cocoa and coffee. A good session beer that is heavy without being too heavy. One of the best Brooklyn Brewery beers I’ve had.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a viscous black color with a trim brown head. Smells strongly of espresso. Tastes as "intesified" as advertised - loaded with coffee, baker’s cocoa, and plenty of malt. Quite tasty.

Via growler via trade with lilbeerdoctor. Thanks Margret. Pours black with a thin tan head. Nose is very very coffee, with some sweet malt notes. Taste is sweet and rich and full of coffee. Pretty nice coffee stout.

draft and handbottle (thanks Marc) courtesy of Vine and Barley. Pours a deep black with a huge tan head. Massive roast coffee nose. Just huge, its a little intimidating. It is sadly a little one dimensional though, but amazing in its intensity. Flavor is heavy caramel and dark chocolate up front with moderate roast. Huge coffee follows but not near as roasty as other coffee stouts like the Beer Geek beers Mikkeller has put out. This is more drinkable in my opinion. You could drink of a few of these without going into overload. Creamy cappucino like finish with just a hint of roasted malt bitterness. This is one of Brooklyn’s finest efforts. Outstanding

Pours a deep black. Roasty, chocolate, coffee, coffee, coffee nose. Flavor is less coffee than i expected from the nose. Good sweetdark malts, some dark fruit. Oily, full mouthfeel. Dark chocolate/semi-sweet Bitter in the end.

Freshly tapped at Cole’s. Pours black with a litle head. Lace is there later on. If you love coffee, here it is. Not that drinkable for me. A regular stout taste, above average carbonation. Brewery continues to brew interesting beers within traditional conventions.
