Commercial Description:
Winter’s getting pretty old, isn’t it? Well, springtime is on the way, and we think it’s time to perk up. As strange as it may seem, coffee is intricately entwined with the story of modern stouts. Until the 1700’s, most dark beers were smoky in flavor – the malts were dried over wood fires. It was the development of coffee roasting technology that soon allowed brewers to achieve clean roasted flavors in their malts. It’s not surprising that the fruit and roast notes in fine coffees meld perfectly with roasted malt flavors. For our coffee we went directly to the ultimate source, Duane Sorenson of the famous Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Stumptown originally hails from Portland, Oregon, but they’ve just started roasting in Red Hook, Brooklyn also, and we’re pleased to welcome them to the neighborhood. We’ve brewed the beer with solid British and American malts, and then “intensified” our stout with Duane’s Guatemalan Full City roast beans, giving the beer a wonderfully complex coffee aroma and flavor.

This beer pairs beautifully with burgers, venison, duck, desserts, and….ummm…brunch. Yeah, you bet. So if winter’s tired you out, try Brooklyn Intensified Coffee Stout. It’s a stimulus package we can all believe in.

Malts: British Pale Ale, Crystal and Chocolate malts, American black malt and black barley
Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi
Hops: Willamette
Intensification: Stumptown Guatemalan Full City Roast Coffee Beans
O.G.: 18.8° Plato (1076)
ABV: 8.0%

7/12/2009: The bar beer menu had this listed as "Brooklyn Reserve Secret Recipe Chocolate Coffee Stout", but I’m pretty sure that it was this beer. Anyways, this beer looks like liquid obsidian with a foamy tan head. It has a rich, semi-sweet chocolate aroma blended with roasted malts. The flavor is a smooth combination of dark chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt with a chocolate finish. The coffee is definitely present in this beer and provides a deep espresso flavor that pairs very well with the roasted grain and malts. However, there is just enough residual sweetness to temper the beer somewhat and impart lots of complex chocolate flavors. This medium-bodied beer is smooth and quite decadent. Nicely done overall. Yum!

Several pints (draught) at Broneys in Athens, Ohio during Ohio Brew Week 2009. Rating #107 for this beer.

Listed at Brewer’s Reserve - Coffee Flavored Stout at Broney’s in Athens, for Brew Week. Jet black, with no head. Very minimal aroma evident. Medium body, with a coffee bitterness that reminds me of chicory more than coffee. Finishes drier than anticipated.

Draft @ gngerman a deep black pour with a thn tan head. Aroma was mostly of rosted chocolate notes but also had some mild cocoa notes. Flavor was similar but seemed to have more chocolate notes than aroma indicated. Nothing to intense as far as the coffee goes still enjoyable. A smooth yet light finish.

On tap at Tyler’s. Pours an attractive black with bright tan one-finger head. Smells of roasty and pleasantly bitter coffee with mild sweetness. Taste is sweeter, and quite creamy. I wanted the bitterness back. Thin palate. Pretty good overall, but nothing too special.

Draught @ Ølfestival Valby - CBF09, Copenhagen, Denmark.
Clear medium brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is heavy malty, coffee, light aroma of chocolate. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20090515]

On tap at the ’brooklyn’ brewery. Midnight color with a little brown head. Crisp coffee aroma and the coffee taste did not linger so the flavor mixed well with the dose of malt, dash of oatmeal, cut with a hop and finished sweet. Excellent beer.

On tap at Tyler’s Taproom, Durham. Pours black as expected. Big espresso aroma. Smooth coffee taste balanced with rich roasted malts. Not quite up to the level of Breakfast Stout, Espresso Oak Aged Yeti, or Speedway Stout but few beers are. Still an incredibly well done coffee Imperial stout.

Draft @ Vine & Barley. Pours black with brown head. Big coffee aroma with hints of chocolate and vanilla. Fresh brewed coffee and cream flavor with bittersweet chocolate. I’m getting a similar aftertaste I get from drinking real coffee. Full body with moderate carbonation.
