Commercial Description:
Winter’s getting pretty old, isn’t it? Well, springtime is on the way, and we think it’s time to perk up. As strange as it may seem, coffee is intricately entwined with the story of modern stouts. Until the 1700’s, most dark beers were smoky in flavor – the malts were dried over wood fires. It was the development of coffee roasting technology that soon allowed brewers to achieve clean roasted flavors in their malts. It’s not surprising that the fruit and roast notes in fine coffees meld perfectly with roasted malt flavors. For our coffee we went directly to the ultimate source, Duane Sorenson of the famous Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Stumptown originally hails from Portland, Oregon, but they’ve just started roasting in Red Hook, Brooklyn also, and we’re pleased to welcome them to the neighborhood. We’ve brewed the beer with solid British and American malts, and then “intensified” our stout with Duane’s Guatemalan Full City roast beans, giving the beer a wonderfully complex coffee aroma and flavor.

This beer pairs beautifully with burgers, venison, duck, desserts, and….ummm…brunch. Yeah, you bet. So if winter’s tired you out, try Brooklyn Intensified Coffee Stout. It’s a stimulus package we can all believe in.

Malts: British Pale Ale, Crystal and Chocolate malts, American black malt and black barley
Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi
Hops: Willamette
Intensification: Stumptown Guatemalan Full City Roast Coffee Beans
O.G.: 18.8° Plato (1076)

Poured from the tap into a tasting glass. The color was a very dark black with a brownish foamy head. Some real nice lacing. The smell is a nice coffee flavor with a hint of burnt malts. The taste is a strong coffee bean flavor. Malty hints also come out in the taste in the back end. A bit of a mocha flavor as well. The feel to this beer is quite easy. Sliding over the taste buds and giving a slight alcohal feel to the pallete without hampering the flavor or the feel to the beer. Serving type: on-tap

Draft at the Brewery - Midnight black in color with a rich dark brown head. The aroma is full of sweet, roast coffee. It has a full body and a heavy, oily mouthfeel. It has a rich malty taste with plenty of coffee to boot. It finishes strong and sweet. matches perfectly with any rich food. Garrett Oliver is a master of the craft.

On tap at the ’brooklyn’ brewery. Midnight color with a little brown head. Crisp coffee aroma and the coffee taste did not linger so the flavor mixed well with the dose of malt, dash of oatmeal, cut with a hop and finished sweet. Excellent beer.

Mornings are not pretty, especially pre-coffee. Long before I ever fell in love with beer, coffee was my main elixir of life and vitality. Any one of my close friends and family can attest to the horrors of a morning Kristyn before she sups on her morning cup of Joe. Now pairing my love for coffee with my even greater love for beer, the trumpets have trumpeted, angels have sung, and heaven on earth can be found. Brooklyn Brewery and Garrett Oliver excel in creating classic beers with great precision and finesse. Flying high at the top of their beers is the keg-only Brewmasters Reserve series. The most recent Brewmasters Reserve that I was able to sup on was their Intensified Coffee Stout. Liquid nirvana, I tell you and far better than any morning cup of coffee could ever hope to be.

Poured a bit on the thin side but black as the coffee I brew every night before bedtime. Yes, I like my coffee cold in the morning, and after having stewed overnight in my fridge, I get to blast the gunk out of my eyes each morning with extra-concentrated iced coffee perkiness, hold the cream please. What I have here now in the wee hours of the afternoon is my morning bliss taken to expansive new heights. A roiling tan head burbles and bubbles, percolating down to a tan blanket of perfection. Eyes closed, I can smell the coffee beans being freshly ground and then, a few moments later, the soothing smell of fresh coffee being brewed. Crunchy, cooked espressos beans take me back once more to another culinary delight of my youth: chocolate covered espresso beans. Black, dark, and crunchy with dry roasted perfection, a hint of tobacco smoke wafts by as I prepare to sup on my morning cup of Intensified Coffee Stout. Soft, smooth, clean and creamy all at once. Many a stout go for the burnt espresso and crema palate pleasers, but this is freshly brewed coffee indulgence. Coffee in the front, middle, and back, my mouth is all smiles. Fresh vanilla bean mingles amidst her slightly darker, more espresso-like notes while tobacco esters continue to ground her palate. Definitely a sipper to enjoy after a slow period of “warming up”. The further I delve into her black coffee depths, the more my palate starts to enjoy a dry, scorched finish reminiscent of smoked cigars and burnt coffee. Rinse and refresh, the Intensified Coffee Stout is exactly just that: an intense coffee stout of exquisitely executed proportions.

If there were ever a Brewmasters Reserve for which I would commit questionable acts to have bottled, this one would be top at the list. Anyone who scoffs at the idea of stouts being refreshing obviously hasn’t tried this one.

[Draft @ Union Hall] Poured an opaque black color with a medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, roasted malts, some smoked woods, and chocolate. Taste of dry, roasted coffee, chocolate, light smoke, vanilla bean, and a dry, coffee finish.

On tap at hopcat, grand raids, mi. Opaque black with creamy brown, medium to large head. Big coffee aroma with dry choolate, pretty amazing. Really flavorful coffee and chocolate, and pretty *intense* actually, nice roast, a good hop component, a little bitterness. Medium, creamy body. Delicious, absolutely delicious.
