COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brooklyn Lager, the Brewery's flagship label, is New York's "hometown" beer, brewed to a pre-Prohibition recipe that dates back to the days when Brooklyn was the brewing capital of the East Coast. Brooklyn Lager has won numerous awards. Wrote Michael Jackson in the Simon & Schuster Pocket Guide to Beer: "The dry-hopped, fresh, flowery, firm, flavourful, Brooklyn Lager **-*** started well, in 1988, and has gained in character since."

355 ml bottle - pours clear amber with a big white head that leaves excellent lace. Super surprising aroma of fresh floral and citrus hops, alongside a malt sweetness. Flavour maltier than aroma, though the hops are still dominant, and lend a mildly bitter finish to the brew. Delicate carbonation. This is remarkable for a lager - more reminiscent of some good ales - the whole package reminds me especially of the Anchor Liberty Ale. Great stuff, and adding this as a permanent listing is one of the rare positive moves made by the LCBO.

UPDATED: MAR 20, 2013 Draft at Jerryís. Copper with good, foamy white head / Sweet, floral nose of pine, clover honey / Light body, somewhat watery, with otherwise good balance and very dry, bitter finish / Lean flavors of honey, straw, and biscuit / Fair, with really no "Vienna" character. Much more of a pilsener.

Dark colour. Bitter and flowery, quite full taste! Donít quite know what to make of this, is it sweet or is it dry? But itís good, thatís for sure.

Bottle. Im glad this is going to be a regular beer from the lcbo. This is one of the best lager ive tried. Pours amber with a big white head. I like the strong presence of hops (especially for a lager) which leave a nice bitter after taste.

12oz. bottle - pours orangey golden amber with a big, foamy white head. Leaves excellent lacing down the glass. Aroma is shocking for a lager, especially in this bland Ontario market - itís fresh and floral hops all the way, with a nice bready malt character in the background. The flavour has a much bigger malt profile than the aroma, with that same breadiness and some sticky sweetness coming forward before a pleasing bitter/dry finish. Smooth drinking all the way through. Nice hop-forward aftertaste as well. A fine example of what a lager can be - they donít have to be fizzy, piss-yellow and boring.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2008 Many thanks to 3 Sons and dogs in Wexford tonight for providing the 2 and 3 oz free samples of Brooklynís various beers. Iím not sure if 3 ounces of beer is really enough to provide a rating, I like to chug 12 oz bottles. Anyway, here it goes. This Brooklyn lagerís pour is orangey yellow with a whitish head. Itís bottle has an attractive label. Oddly, the beer smells like a pale ale or IPA, you know, the aroma of fruity hops astern. Has that typical pale-like medium hoppy asperity. The finish is mild to medium coup de main and it lasts for a few moments. This certainly is not your typical lager. If it didnít have a style listed, I would say it is more like ale, possibly even american pale ale. Gone, in a moment! On par wit elliot ness and penn pilsner but not as good as point classic or dos equis xx amber.

35.5cl bottle from Tesco. Amber colour with a rapidly disappearing white head; strong hoppy aroma; a full mouthfeel with lots of dry hoppy bitterness; and a citrus sharp aftertaste. Excellent.

Overall I felt this was a somewhat bland beer. No reaction to this whatsoever and very unremarkable.

Bottle from the LCBO. Beautiful deep orange-amber colour with a soft white head, and a fresh aroma of bready malt and mildly citric and floral hops, like orange and lemon blossoms. The flavour has some slightly fruity sweetness off the top, before the tasty hops kick in towards the finish. I know it may not be all that for you Americans who have been drinking it forever, but for us Ontarians, having this world-class lager finally available in our province is cause for celebration.

Fresh sixer from LCBO. Wow, a quality micro that even your Macro-drinking friends will not blink at - and I mean that in the best possible way!!! Nicely bitter hop profile that puts flavor shape ahead of harshness or shortness... and plenty of citrus and fruity dazzle on the nose. With enough refined malt sweetness to keep things from getting thin, this is a true class act & a major accomplishment for a broad-market accessible Lager.
