Brooklyn Lager, the Brewery's flagship label, is New York's "hometown" beer, brewed to a pre-Prohibition recipe that dates back to the days when Brooklyn was the brewing capital of the East Coast. Brooklyn Lager has won numerous awards. Wrote Michael Jackson in the Simon & Schuster Pocket Guide to Beer: "The dry-hopped, fresh, flowery, firm, flavourful, Brooklyn Lager **-*** started well, in 1988, and has gained in character since."

UPDATED: MAR 15, 2007 Tasted again 15/03/2007. 330ml bottle shared with 4 others at Island Bay. Great drop - nice balance of sweet juicy toasted malt and spicy hops. Dry hopping gives a slight chemical note to nose and astringency t palate. Too hoppy for a Vienna but fantastic as a complex good drinking beer. Quite well travelled but I’d love to try it fresher. Upped from 3.1 to 3.5. Tasted 12/01/2006. 120z bottle from Rumble’s, Wellington. Rich gold colour, bright, with a fluffy white head. Rich malt aroma, very continental, which reminds me of Sam Adam’s - those east coasters must love their Munich and Vienna malts. Woody hop spice: nutmeg, cinnamon. Dry in the mouth: sappy, toffee, toasty, slightly astringent, malt character, with more spice in the hop flavour. Medium bitterness. Medium-light weight and just a little overcarbonated. Crisp and snappy. Very good but it falls well short of blowing me away.

Amber color with head that laces throughout. Aroma is rich and flowery with a sweet hint (honey?). Flavor is fresh hops and somewhat smokey, slightly caramel-sweet malt. Finish is bitter and very well balanced, medium bodied. Excellent.

Bottle. Sweet malty aroma with a little bready yeast. Clear golden pour veers toward amber and has a creamy beige head. Taste is sweet and malty, some caramel and very light toast. Light body is actually kind of watery, nice squinch of bitterness at the back of the tongue, where light hops, herbiness, and a touch of spice converge. Clean and pure but not very exciting.

Translucent amber body with around a half an inch of off-white head. Smells hoppy and roasty malty. Tastes hoppy and roasty, kind of citrusy sweet notes in the flavor too. Full-flavored and medium bodied. Not quite as crisp or clean as one might expect a lager to be, but a pretty tasty beer.

Bottle. Dark amber colour, large off-white head, bubbly. Dusty hoppiness, slightly fizzy smelling nose, slightly sweet malt. Very clean taste, bitter and slightly lively slightly fruity taste. Slightly floral and bitter finish, very clean, very easy drinking. Quite ok.
