COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In Williamsburg, Brooklyn, we forge barley malt and hops from Germany, aromatic raw sugar from Mauritius and yeast from Belgium into our latest beer, Brooklyn Local 1. Behind the full golden color you'll find an alluring aroma, a dynamic complex of flavors. Belgian flair, Brooklyn fortitude and a dusting of our special yeast. To create this beer, we use the old technique of 100% bottle re-fermentation, a practice now rare even in Europe. It gives this beer a palate of unusual depth. Enjoy it locally or globally, as an aperitif or with your favorite dishes. It is particularly nice with spicy seafood and with fine cheeses.

Funky clovy apricot nose. Hazy amber, thick head, minimal lacing. Highly funked flavor of candied pears with hints of banana. Alcohol noticeable. Perfect with loud cheeses. Much better than Local 2. I’m kicking myself for passing this up for so long. It’s like the first time I had Duvel, except Duvel doesn’t do it for me anymore. Surprisingly funky.

A decent if slightly boring Belgian from Brooklyn. Local 1 is a very good beer and I have few complaints about it. The flavor and aroma have a nice but fairly generic spice character of black pepper and clove. The yeast is earthy but not spectacularly so. There are some sweet fruits in the mix. The feel is smooth with fine, relatively gentle bubbles. The alcohol is well-hidden. I have heard (maybe from marketing materials) this beer compared to a saison, and I’m going to disagree with that characterization. It’s just a generic BSPA that has neither big flaws nor big character.

750ml bottle. Hazy golden orange with a frothy off white head, some sheeted lacing. Great nose of lemon peel, light coriander, banana and clove spice. Good carbonation, with a good amount of dry fruit on the finish.

Tap at CBF 2009. Light clementine, apple nose, spice - pepper, coriander. Hazy golden low head. Fruit and spice well balaced, pleasant. Spictness with staying power. Apples retronasal.

This brew had my affection before I even popped the cork off it, since the #1 local is this rater’s primary mode of transportation. And this brew transported me as well. Aroma of yeast and a bit of floral hops. Cloudy tan pour and a fluffy head. The flavor is very nutty and yeasty, not sweet or hoppy at all. It seems like other raters had very different impressions, so maybe there is some difference between batches. A very interesting brew, and one of Brooklyn’s better releases.

Pours a hazy golden color. Huge fluffy white head with good retention. Aroma is banana and Belgian yeast. Up front, the flavor has a candy-like sweetness similar to the marshmallow circus peanuts we ate as kids. It quickly mellows to some more tropical fruit (banana and passion fruit) flavors with more Belgian yeast. Full-bodied mouthfeel, but smooth. Nice beer.

From a 750 ml bottle into a water glass. Pours a hazy blond with a TON of fizzy head. Head lasts five or ten minutes and leaves gobs of lacing on the glass. Mouthfeel is actually kind of thin. Aroma is very clovey and spicey. Taste is about the same with lots of spice and spicey too. It really tastes like it was brewed with brett but I can’t find that in the description. Not too bad but nothing special; a little too biting for me.

$7.99 / 25.4 ounce bottle - No disrespect Brooklyn (as if you care), but this is suspect. First of all, despite my efforts to pour the slowest beer around, this damn beer produced such a huge cumulonimbus head that it took five minutes for the clouds to clear! When the storm passed, I was assaulted with a lackluster Belgian with sour, bitter notes. I will weather the storm and finish the bottle, but not very happy about it.
