A bit of gun smoke and an aroma surprisingly like an austere champagne greets my nose as I pop the cork. The beer is quite well carbonated and pours with a fluffy, quite airy, almost perfectly white head. The head starts out four-fingers in height, despite a fairly careful pour; it leaves a rocky, varied surface and a layered pattern of lace on the sides of my glass as it slowly subsides. The beer is a brilliantly clear, soft copper to full gold color. The aroma is quite spice driven, with notes of orange zest, earthy note reminiscent of coriander, pickled ginger and clove (especially as it warms, at which point it becomes the most notable note). While the bottle does not mention spicing, the aroma is clean & distinct enough, that I would definitely guessed some were used (even if I am dead wrong); it just seems a bit too clean to be purely yeast derived. Underneath the omnipresent spice notes, which I do like here, there are touches of banana, green apple esters, grassy / herbal hops, raw grain notes (almost grassy) and aromas of freshly crushed soda crackers. The aroma is actually quite malt driven towards the finish and can serve as a nice balance to the spicing if you really dig around in the nose.
A prickly carbonation, and a fairly light body leave the after effect of my first sip quite subtle. This finishes quite a bit cleaner than I was expecting, with only a subtle palate impact for such a big beer. This is also quite dry, with only a touch of sweetness that is a combination of both light malt and alcohol notes. The effect of this beer really makes me think of champagne. The beer is very clean, almost as if it has been well filtered (reminding me this time of Duvel). The spice flavors are still quite present in the flavor, though perhaps not as distinctly and in a slightly different way in the flavor. Spice note of orange zest, clove-like turpenes that numb the tongue a bit and some mace. The finish has a warming effect that is a combination of phenolics and alcohol, and which ultimately contributes to a palate cleansing quality. The flavor really has an amped up, phenolic note of clove to it especially as the beer moves through to the finish; this note really lingers on in the mouth for quite some time. This is definitely deceptively easy drinking and light for a beer of its strength.
Very interesting, I was not sure what to expect from this beer, but was certainly not expecting something so refined and austere. This is obviously a very well technically crafted beer, somehow it just comes off as a bit too squeaky clean to me (perhaps it was filtered a bit too much). Based on the initial aroma I would have definitely said there was spices added to this brew, but the flavor, while certainly spicy driven, is not so nearly convincing and even the clove dominated aromatic notes after the beer warmed a bit is purely fermentation derived. I really need to get another bottle of this, as I feel like some aging (a year or two) will add back some missing complexity. All in all a tasty beer, that seems a touch too phenolic to be really great, but one which I would be happy to have a case of in my cellar. golubj (1275), Sunnyvale, California, USA Oct 5, 2007 Bottle.
