In Williamsburg, Brooklyn, we forge barley malt and hops from Germany, aromatic raw sugar from Mauritius and yeast from Belgium into our latest beer, Brooklyn Local 1. Behind the full golden color you'll find an alluring aroma, a dynamic complex of flavors. Belgian flair, Brooklyn fortitude and a dusting of our special yeast. To create this beer, we use the old technique of 100% bottle re-fermentation, a practice now rare even in Europe. It gives this beer a palate of unusual depth. Enjoy it locally or globally, as an aperitif or with your favorite dishes. It is particularly nice with spicy seafood and with fine cheeses.

750 ml bottle from Richmond Beverage in Richmond, VT (March 2008), sampled a little below cellar temperature (to start) from a Maudite glass and accompanied by pepperoni, smoked mozzarella and Twin Peaks. Very pale, opaque gold with a moderate fizzy snow-white head that disappears quickly and doesn’t lace....hugely potent spicy aroma of lemongrass, coriander, orangepeel and ginger with underpinnings of pale and caramelized malts faintly showing through....highly carbonated, caramel-sweet at the beginning, with citric acidity and spicy qualities showing up midpalate, drying peppery notes towards the finish which is lightly tart and a bit saison-like....pretty light-bodied and a little too effervescent for my taste, but a solid product and one of the better Brooklyn brews I’ve had, certainly.

Originally sampled on 12/11/08. Local 1 poured a nice looking cloudy, straw yellow body with lots of carbonation and a thick off white cap that left fairly thick lace. Aroma and flavor were both very subtle, on the light side even. Both had faint hints of fruits (apple and pear), yeast and some malts, alcohol was well hidden. Mouthfeel was smooth with a little dryness, overall it was decent beer thats worth a try, but i felt it was too light and didnt have enough character.

Crystal clear gold pour, regenerative white head. Nose is hard fruit, spice, Belgian yeast. Leans sweet. Middle has a champagne evervescence, light kilned malt, apple, and some unripe pear. Finish is dry and expansive. Competing with Duvel, better than many champagnes, great apperitive.

750ml . £12.50 . I’m fine paying that in one context, but only when I’m not underwhelmed and I kinda was . I blame myself , drunk and at an American themed burger bar - this was the baller option. I guess subconsciously I still love Brooklyn brewing, their flavoursome Chocolate Stout is a long standing favourite of mine , and Garrett Oliver seems cool as far as beer celebrities go . Pours bright sun kissed orange with a subtle white foam ... Nose is orange peel , coriander spice, striking yeast notes , bready malts . It drinks this way from drunken hazy interpretation.... But nothing special about this American/Belgian marriage.

Sweet smell with banana, yeast and some honey. Taste is alcohol, yeast, medium sweet with sugar. It never becomes too sweet and the tastes linger on in a nice, long finish. Solid.
