"Collaborative beers are excellent excuses for us to do some creative scheming with our fun and highly talented friends. So when our pals at Eleven Madison Park said they wanted to make a beer with us and our mutual friends at the Van Winkle Distillery, we said ’brilliant!’ Julian Van Winkle sent us two rare Pappy Van Winkle 20-year Bourbon barrels, and we filled them with our Brooklyn Brown Ale and Brooklyn Local 2. The beers each spent three months in these venerable barrels and then we re-fermented them in the bottle with Champagne yeast. Now they’ve emerged, beautifully transformed into Nine Pin Ale and Local 11. Nine Pin Ale features light chocolate and coffee notes underpinned by vanilla. Local 2 has become Local 11, an ethereal beer that shows off the floral notes from the oak. These are two of the most delicious beers we’ve ever made. We may have made them for ourselves, but we hope you enjoy them too." — Garret Oliver

Location: 750 ml bottle at Eleven Madison Park, 6/15/13, Rating #3030!

Aroma: It has a lot going on: bourbon, vanilla, spice, dark malts, roast, brown sugar, and oak
Appearance: Pours a dark brownish color with a slight red hue, and a lighter brown colored head
Flavor: The taste is rich and malty, with a smooth bourbon flavor, and some tasty oak as well
Palate: The body is full, with a smooth, rich mouthfeel, and just the right amount of heat
Overall Impression: Maybe it’s the environment in which you are drinking it, maybe it’s the quality of the beer itself, or maybe it’s a combination, but this beer is absolutely world class. I have a hard time naming a barrel aged beer I enjoyed more, and I’ve had some really good ones. This was really really good.

Bottle shared with Streets and Ben at Eleven Madison Park. Pours a dark brown body with frothy brown head. Aroma is straight bourbon, and you can smell it across the room. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, with notes of vanilla, oak, bourbon, Belgian candy, yeast, esters, and light sweet chocolate.

The third beer in my pairing dinner at EMP. I was very surprised that they gave me entire bottle to drink. Anyways pours rich dark brown with great nose of caramel, vanilla, and bourbon. Tastes unreal of caramel, vanilla, cocoa, cola, earth and just the best bourbon richness. slightly boozy on finish and absolutely delicious

Bottle at Eleven Madison Park. Pours with a mostly clear (at first), reddish-brown hued body with a large and lasting tan head. Perfect lace. Aromas are of vanillin, earthy, rich spice, leather, sandalwood, brown sugar, candied dates, mild phenol and earth. Very complex marriage of subtle bourbon and dark belgian ale spice. Flavors showcase nothing short of an exceptional bourbon character! Nutty, brown sugar, coconut, vanillin, cocoa, cola, clove and complex wood. Melanoidins. Subdued yeast, peppery and raisin notes. Medium alcohol on the tongue, lasting complexity, nutty, fudge. Nice spice as it warms. Easy to drink (scary at the alcohol, bottle size and price). A touch thin and hot would be my only complaint of this beer. Very lively carbonation and warming. Excellent!

Man oh man. What a spectacular brew. The nose is is caramel and nutty with the best, subtle bourbon notes. Not overpowering like some BA beers can be. Pours a dark brown with with off white head that takes time to dissipate. The first sip blows your mind. You taste the sweet caramel notes with the bourbon being prominent, added an extra layer of taste. This brew was amazing (and I’m not a big Local 2 fan). If you have the money to spare, I highly recommend it.
