COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mary Wiles joined our brewery team after spending 30 years brewing and doing quality control for a Very, Very Big Brewer. Mary evolved into a craft beer brewer, and now she’s doing our quality control, having fun while helping us make sure that Brooklyn beers are tasting great and ready to make you happy. But Mary has a bright thing lurking in her past, present and future – Mary has maple trees. A lot of maple trees. Actually, a ridiculous number of maple trees, acres of them, right northwest of us in upstate New York. And her family farm makes 100% real New York State maple syrup.

Real maple syrup tastes great on pancakes and waffles, but it’s awfully good in beer too. Porter is a classic British ale style that traveled to the United States, sustained George Washington during the Revolution, and later built London’s great breweries. Mary’s Maple Porter is a rich, dark ale featuring a large portion of her maple syrup in the kettle. After fermentation by our house ale yeast, the syrup is no longer sweet (yeast likes to eat maple syrup too), but the maple flavor shows through in a complex interplay with caramel, chocolate, and cof fee flavors from our blend of roasted malts. An earthy hop note rounds it all out.

Appearance: Dark browns with black inclinations – that moment just before night covers the world. Lovely crema head fades into a thin collar bordering a carefree puddle. Swirls with no lace.
Nose: Maple and dry earthen nutty Swiss chocolates. Dark stone fruits. Smooth and creamy. Freshly picked cherries in the middle, the darker the better.
Palate: Maple and cherries amidst a moist soft chocolate cake of decadent award-winning proportions. The mouthfeel is like velvet – divine. Cream and dark stone fruits in the middle with delicate maple accents. Rustic finish with campfire smoke and burnt wood. Slowly grows some bakers chocolate in the breath as she warms up. Silken.
Final Thoughts: Made with maple from Mary’s Maple Trees, this Brewmaster’s Reserve from the classy gents and dames at Brooklyn Brewery was liquid sophistication and gentility. Dark wooden rooms, tendrils of cigar smoke, a snifter of Mary’s Maple Porter, and life is indeed good. A newbie of sorts to the craft beer world, Mary is in no way new to beer and her attention to quality and detail I feel and tasted will bring another level of awesomeness to Brooklyn Brewery.

Transfer from BA and reviewed on 2-12-12 - Served in a chalice glass. Appearance – Served a deep brown color with a tan head. The head fades giving some nice lacing. Smell –The maple syrup is up front and potent with a bit of other sweet brown sugar aromas mixed in. While the maple aroma persists throughout the nose, some more roasted malts begin working their way in toward the middle and end of the aroma and round it out quite nicely. Taste – Not as sweet as anticipated from the nose. A more roasted malt flavor of some barley and oat meet the tongue initially. A very light sweet brown sugar and maple come in toward the middle of the taste experience, but are much more mild then would be expected. The sweetness mingles with the maltiness toward the end laving a rather pleasant roasty maple flavor in the mouth at the end of the taste. Mouthfeel – A good thickness with a very moderate level of carbonation. Fairly creamy and quite easy to drink. Overall – A nice dark porter, with more subtle characteristics of maple sweetness. A good brew; not too sweet with a nice flavor and aroma profile.

chinchill (2128) - South Carolina, USA - MAR 3, 2014
On tap at the 2014 Secret Stash Bash (Atlanta). Nice opaque near black body but almost no head. Excellent aroma is fairly complex but moderately, at most, strong. Hints of maple here unfortunately only appear in the taste as vague sweet notes. Mildly sweet but enough to make this seem best as a dessert or after dinner beer. Near full body with medium (slightly too high?) carbonation.

Draft to taster. Looks good for the style; a translucent cola with beige head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells of dark malt, very mild maple syrup, and a touch of roast. Tastes like it smells with more maple. Average on the palate. A little thin, but not bad.

Draught at "Göteborgs Porterfestival" 2013. November 16.
First tried it by myself and rated it, then also sampled it from pitchers during a tasting with Garrett Oliver the same evening. As of Garrett this was a 2011 vintage.
Very dark brown to black color, dark brown head. Sweet, grainy, malty scent. Sweet, malty, chocolate taste. Medium mouthfeel, medium low bitterness.

On tap at the Draught House. Brown pour with a tan head. I get some nutty and toffee notes in the aroma. The flavor has some light maple as well as some nuttiness and toffee. There is also a hint of grape in there. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

On tap at Capones. Pours a deep dark brown color with a thin, dark tan head. Smell is chocolaty and nutty, with nice roasted malts. Sweet malts up front with a faint bitter twinge, a bit of nuttiness near the end, with more lingering malty sweetness. Slick and sweet with a creamy body and moderate carbonation.

The taste starts out with sweet flavors of maple, nuts, caramel and coffee. Then a hearty roasted malt character comes in. The hops presence is good for the style and creates a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.
