COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

Nice deep amber colour with no head--but that could be from the still pour. Aroma is very nice, detectable sweetness and a whole bunch of fruits! Nice taste, somewhat 'woody' and 'piney', but a nice overall taste, albeit a bit strong even for eleven percent abv. Definately worth a try though, especially for < $3 in a bottle at home!

UPDATED: OCT 9, 2005 Aroma is malty, full of sweet caramel and oak. Flavor is a equal balanced of malty sweetness and citrusy hops, notes of burnt caramel and oranges, and a faint metallic hint in the finish.

Millennium Edition: Cloudy orange/brown colour. Fine aroma with dark/heavy fruits and malt. The flavour is of course sweet (caramel etc.?) but not too much. Lovely warming alcohol and vinous palate. A great good night beer! (My bottle was 11.8% ABV).

This brew is indeed a monster. Initial flavors complement the aroma with malt, caramel, and fresh hops dominating. The beer finishes rather warm however, and does not mask the alcoholic strength. A good barley wine but not the best.

UPDATED: JUN 6, 2004 '02, aged 2 years: Cherry-chestnut colour. Aroma of alcohol, molasses, brown sugar. Relatively soft body. Palate shows light peach, cherry, rich pale malts. At this age, the beer has mellowed and the flavours, which I find a little intense when fresh, have really come together to produce a stylish brew. Not awesome, but definitely some fine style. '03, aged 1 year: Slightly darker than the '02 in colour (tasted side-by-side). The aroma is much more alcoholic - this is pretty harsh actually, but not out of line for the style. This is a little sweeter, tarter, and nowhere near as cohesive. That extra year makes a big difference. Ar 6 Ap 4 F 6 P 3 O 12

Fresh: Bronze barley wine, with an intensely malty, dark fruit aroma, and palate that is exceedingly rich and chewy with malt. You gotta love barley wine to get into this one!

Poured a copper red body with a thin, light tan head. Slight lacing.
Smells of fusel alcohols. Very strong smell that I doubt will decrease with age.
Very strong malt/alcohol taste that just doesn't balance out. Hops are overwhelmed by the extreme alcohol taste. Very warming too.
The alcohol bite screws up the palate too. Makes this a beer that burns.

2/2/03: bottle. lighter orange color than a typical barley wine with a very thin line of carbonation. high alcohol smell. surprisingly wonderful flavor. spice, malt and alcohol tastes. very smooth. after seeing the color of this beer i was worried that i would not like the taste. ok, i was wrong, this is a good beer.

2003. Smells like solvent with a hint of banana. Tastes like solvent with a generous wash of alcohol. This is a very poor beer. I am contemplating pouring the rest out and giving away the other bottle.

UPDATED: APR 14, 2003 2003: Great beer. I had 3 and it's extremely hard to type. The only drawback is the Brooklyn Brewery finish that's on all their beers. re-rate: I had 4 one night, setting the 'record' at my bar.

2003: This beer poured a medium amber color and formed a off white head that faded quickly and left little lace. An aroma of malt, hops and caramel with a hint of the alcohol. A flavor of malt, caramel and some alcohol present. The finish was sweet and warming with the alcohol present. Not a bad barleywine, but may need to set down awhile to bring out more.
