Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

Fall 2008 Bottle. Pours a glowing darker red-brown with a few larger bubbles and a very thing white froth. Really fruity yeasty aroma, crystal malts, light rich caramel, lightly doughy, some strawberries. First taste is heavy alcohol, glassy thin malts, doughy caramel, a bit of hay, quite fruity, candied barley. Needs age I suppose. Lighter medium bodied with sparkling fizzy carbonation, not sticky.

Bottle (2008): pours a dark amber with a thin white ring of head around the edge of the glass, fruity aroma (reminds me of fruit punch), taste of dark fruit, some alcohol, a little syrupy but not too much that it makes it difficult to drink.

Bottle... Poured amber with a thin beige head that faded immediately. Aroma had brown sugar and a bite of alcohol to clear your nasal system. A lot of carbonation and with deep malt tones, sweet and a kick of hops and alcohol. It seemed a little premature. I am sure this aged for two years would really allow this brew to develop.

Poured a clear light brown with little head. Taste of dried fruit and alcohol, which is a bit much. Some spice is there in the back trying to get out. Gave me that warm feeling.

2007 bottle. Aroma of alcohol, fruit, english malts and hops. Flavor has a tart cherry character, and a lot of alcohol. Notes of brandy, The english malt and hops dont come through in the taste. Finish is also lacking. However, despite this, the flavor is pretty decent, and as I drank my bottle I found myself liking it even more. Mouthfeel is slick and carbonation is low. Its a good sipper. Decent, if not spectacular, barley wine.

Breakfast beer on the final day in Copenhagen, Sept 2008. Deep red/brown barley wine. Aroma = all alcohol. Flavour struggles to be found under the strength.

Bottle. Surprised I liked this. Really smooth mouthfeel and the 10 percent kick is fairly well hidden.

2006 12 oz. bottle from Premier Gourmet - Pours a light brown color with a one finger thick off white head. Light lacing. Aroma is toasted malt, esters, and slightly vinous. Flavor is toasted malt and alcohol. There is very little hop presence left in the flavor or aroma. Medium body. I would like to try a fresh one. An OK BW.
