Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a clear amber color with an off-white head. The aroma is very nice with notes of malt and citrus. The taste is very nice wish malt and fruit notes. The finish is especially clean for a 10.8% abv.

12oz single bottle, 2007 vintage, purchased from Charles Street Liquors in Boston. Pours a rich dark clear copper with little head or carbonation. Sweet aroma. Flavour is primarily sweet, with some hops that try (unsuccessfully) to offset the sweetness. Not my thing - but then, it seems most barleywines aren’t.

07 bottle from lb4lb, thanks Deniz. Poured a deep tawny caramel color with a thick off-white head that receded slowly. Aroma of Sweet caramel malt, toffee, and some light citrus notes and hops peaking through. Light, moderately bitter entry with some toffee that leads into a sharp, lightly bitter hop hit that includes some soft citrus such as apricot and light orange. Finishes with some light caramel notes and slight dry. Thanks again Deniz.

2004 Monster Ale. Capital Ale House pairing with Garrett Oliver 05/15/08. Reddish orange mostly clear with small head and nice lacing on the glass. 2004 - still has nice spicey hop aroma with lots of roast and caramel aroma. Raisin plum and roasty malt flavors with some sweet bitterness in the finish.

Bottled- Dark red, small white head. Portwine aroma, some red berries (cherry?) and alcohol. Taste sticking... it’s quite American, i.e. dull and boring compared to what a real barley wine could be. Ah well, you get what you order.

2007 bottle from ucusty, big thanks David!! Aroma is complex with malty notes of caramel, dark ripe fruit, spice, sherry, and slight alcohol. Nice deep cognac copper hue with an off-white average sized head that mostly diminished and left little lace. Flavor was a little off. Alcohol is present with a metallic flavor thats throwing things off. Significant bitter after taste and lively carbonation. Palate is full bodied and alcohol is present. Good nose but was a let down overall. Too bad.

Thanks to ekstedt & friends. Copper with a white head. Faint smell of sweet fudge. Sweet with bitter aftertaste. Soft, rich moutfeel. Prickly carbonation.
