Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

Bottled- Dark red, small white head. Portwine aroma, some red berries (cherry?) and alcohol. Taste sticking... it’s quite American, i.e. dull and boring compared to what a real barley wine could be. Ah well, you get what you order.

2007 bottle from ucusty, big thanks David!! Aroma is complex with malty notes of caramel, dark ripe fruit, spice, sherry, and slight alcohol. Nice deep cognac copper hue with an off-white average sized head that mostly diminished and left little lace. Flavor was a little off. Alcohol is present with a metallic flavor thats throwing things off. Significant bitter after taste and lively carbonation. Palate is full bodied and alcohol is present. Good nose but was a let down overall. Too bad.

bottle.smells like old beer. (well, it is..). looks rather innocent. a bit dark, flavor is much more pleasing than aroma. it does not taste like old beer. it taste like aged beer. aged gracefully. quite well balanced. the aftertaste is bitterswet. this is not my favourite style, but this one is nice. [re-rate, bbf jan 2009, sampled jan 2009] aroma is hoppy, hints of barley wine. nice aroma. rerate 4 to 7. flavor is dark fruits, plums, licorice, alc. hops much less noticeable in flavor.

2007 vintage. warm. malty aroma. medium reddish brown color, clear. minimal head. Sweet malt with cherry fruit flavor. More of a wine than an alcohol taste. Very Good.

Pours a pretty ruby red/copper brown with practically no off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts with a lot of alcohol, also some cherry like wood scents. Cherry is more prevalent in the flavor. Sweet at first, then the cherries turn sour with alcohol and the finish is a little tart with a lingering dry, warming finish.
