Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

355 ml brown bottle. This one is about 2yrs oid, there are no best before dates on the label. Deep brown colour, ruby highlights, head is short but tight bubbled and creamy and swirly. Aroma is malty with toffee and a sweetish brown sugar edge. In the mouth this beer is strongly malty, brown sugar, toffee come through iniitially, then the bitttterness kicks in. Grapefruit is there, moderate alcohol sticks around in the finish. Body is medium to full, medium carbonation. The alcohol content is 10.8%, but it’s far more drinkable than you would expect. Another nice effort Brooklyn.

Light ruby/cherry grenadine look. Almost no head to speak of. Looks thick and syrupy; positively stagnant. Smells of strong sweet cherry/berry. Sweet but in a deep, rich way, not saccharine. Has a red grape/red wine character to the smell, but with a strong alcohol and barley malt. Also light yeast. Really inviting. Taste is of heavy bittersweet wine/grape flavor. Nicely balanced with bitter grape and sweet grape flavors alike. Excellent dry yeast adds even more dimension. It’s a wonderful flavor and the yeast is key. Feels thick and chunky. It’s a choker but a good drinker. Has a real bite, but a welcome one. Meant to be savored. A really great, aged beer. Outstanding.

Poured a nice and clear orange/gold with a creamy eggshell head. Nose was of caramel and figs and plums. Slight woodiness. Tastes bitter up front, mid is all purple fruits, raisins, plum, fig, and it finishes like a sheet of aluminum foil. The metallic taste is just terrible. barf

This was an old bottle 񢉔) that hadn’t aged very gracefully. A faint nose of strawberries, cake and malt. Taste is of raisins, anis, cookies and a little bit of hops. It is sweet and has some complexity, but the overall impression is (sadly) nothing that raises any eyebrows.

A 2004 bottle tasted in 2009. Weak aroma of sweet malt. Apperance is dark red without head. The flavour is of licrish and malt, a bit to sweet. The alcohol is shining threw. Maybe the bottle is to old.

Bottle. Hazy brown amber color with almost no head. Strong and very sweet. Lots of caramel and some hoppy flavor. Alcoholic aftertaste.
