Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

UPDATED: JUN 15, 2014 2012 bottle. Aroma: Intense caramel/toffee malts that have a spirit-like quality; a little citrus lingers in the background. Appearance: Hazy amber pour with a bubbly bone head that dissipates into a bubbly ring. Flavor: A little citrus up front, but the malts don’t wait long to drop the hammer; pretty intense and still has a lot of vigor. Alcohol is pretty apparent. Palate: Medium body, creamy texture, flat carbonation, long finish. Overall: Probably opened this one too early; I think it could go for 2-3 more years and have room left for refinement. Still, it didn’t strike me as a peer of the English barleywines i’ve had the pleasure of trying.

2012 bottle. Incredibly sweet nose of caramel, toffee, light oak, and a hint of cinnamon. Pours a clear medium copper. Sweet (almost sugary) taste with caramel, brown sugar, a mellow, boozy acidity, and a bit of sharp oak. Medium body and a bit sweet, watery mouthfeel. Solid.

"Born in 2012" - Light brown colour with thin but lasting head. Aroma is syrupy sweet with lots of boozy dried fruit rather like a sherry. Flavour is similarly sweet and rich with dried fruit dominating. There are some woody and spicy notes lingering in the background too. Quite thick and warming.

Bottle with Benh at the Bow Bar. Good times. Pours Amber with a cream head. Loads of sweetness with a novel ammount of hops to balance it out. I feel that barleywines have a tendency to get sickly after a while so half a 330ml bottle is more than enough for me.

(bottle, 35.5cl, vintage 2012) Clear, amber colour with a medium-sized and slightly tanned foamy head. Slightly sour and leathery malty aroma with notes of caramel, as well as fruity aspects of plums, citric hops and a tinge of booze. Sweet flavour, medium to full bodied with a calm carbonation. Slightly syrupy and juicy malty start with dried fruity notes of raisins and fruit cake; moderately sweet and fruity finish with subtle bitter hops and a warming alcoholic strength. Quite easy-going for a Barley Wine. 22.IV.14

Transfer From BA - Poured from bottle into chalice glass. Appearance - Pours a hazy copper-orange color with a head that fades fast and leaves almost no lacing. Smell - Sweet fruits and maple are initially present followed by a bit of citrus and some alcohol. Taste - Sweet dried fruits and breadiness of malt are initially present. Then a nice big cherry flavor hits. These give way to some alcohol taste (but not overbearing) and a small floral hop flavor shining through at the end. Mouthfeel - This is superb. A little sticky; its creamy and thick with the perfect level of carbonation. Wonderful for sitting back and sipping. Overall - A good barleywine which doesn’t break the bank. A good by and perfect for any day with not much going on when you feel sipping away.
