Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

very tasty. nice floral hop aroma, and not as sweet as most barleywines. very little alcohol flavor. a little sharp on the aftertaste, but very good otherwise.

12 oz bottle from New Beer Distributors, SoHo, NY. Pours a mildly dark, maybe more amberish colored ale. light head. the beer overall is perhaps a little too sweet for my palate for a barley wine, though it was definitely a reliable "go-to-barleywine" if you are into that type of beer. critiques are primarily the overwhelming sweetness, though the beer is fairly well balanced for an alcohol content of nearly 11%. go for the victory old horizon though if you are looking for true quality in barley wine.

(’07 bottling) Nice deep copper colour with little to no head. Aroma is sweet and boozy. Cherry & Apricot fruit tones, cotton candy. Flavour carries dark cherry cough syrup (slightly medicinal though not much) backed by smokey malt. Alc. comes through strong yet smooth in the finish.

12 oz bottle: Fresh 2007 bottle and butting some of my 6er away for cellaring. Aroma is a nice roasted malt, caramel, a nice hop aroma too, and overall a candy like aroma, but in a good way. Appearance is a nice copper color with a medium to an off white head that diminishes into a soapy tan film. Taste is nice and robust. Good for being a young barley wine. The dark fruit and caramel maltiness make a good combination. A bit of smoke , small but detectable, and somewhat bready. Overall, It’s a prett good Barley wine. It has some alcoholic burn on the back end, but pretty good overall.

Caramel and alcohol aroma. Pours a nice red/gold with thin head. Sweet malt, fairly thin mouthfeel. Sweet alcohol finish. Not bad, but will probably improve if aged.

2007 bottle. Good barleywine, smells sweet caramel and a note of fruit. Taste is pretty sweet with a nice hint of hops to counter the sweet. Caramel and fruity. Alcohol comes through some on the finish.

Not bad on a cold winter night. For sure its one of the more drinkable barleywines out there, its not sticky or thick or too sweet. Generally BB has some of the best looking bottles, I am not really digging this look. Almost 11% ABV justifies the price.
