Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

2007 bottle. Copper pour with a loose, 2 finger head that fades to a thin ring. Smells like orange, lemon, dates, sherry and some alcohol. Strong sherry character in the flavor with notes of plum, pine and citrus with definite alcohol in the finish. Medium body with lots of carbonation and a healthy alcohol warming.

Copper body, thin head and bursting with aromas of citrus fruit, caramel and hops. Well-balanced body of banana and caramel malt with a big burst of hops and alcohol in the finish. Hops and a bit of heat linger and are a bit overpowering, but there’s a lot of good stuff going on initially.

Very nice. Aroma of sweet fruit and malts but the flavor is sweet then bitter hops. Very nice bitter finish, crisp and clean. You don’t get the syrupy feel of some barley wines.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Jacksonville, FL. Bottle marked "Born in 2007". Pours a dark copper/amber color with virtally no head. Aroma is light with malts and a bit of sherry. Taste is robust with a slight bit of burn from the alcohol, though well disguised and easy to drink. Nice!

Pours attractive copper color with small off-white head that disappears quickly. Extremely boozy aroma with notes of citrus, sherry, caramel malts. Really fruity flavor- almost reminds me of a fruit roll up... except with a lot of alcohol. Slight citrus, caramel malts, some nice spice and a bitter finish. I usually don’t detract much for alcohol presence, but this brew seems to have gotten away from Brooklyn. Palate is sticky and a little unpleasant. Overall, however, not a terrible barleywine.

12oz from 2007. Man, do I like this stuff fresh. I think this is underrated. To me, it’s a very nice hybrid of an English style bw - with mellow caramel malts dominating, with some soft port overtones - and an aggressive American hop hellion. Certainly comes on a bit more strongly in the latter category when young, but not at the expense of the former. Citrus, heat, and toffee: a nice, strong combo.

Copper with nice off white head. Aroma is scotch and lots of booze with a touch of spice. Right from the beginning there is a strong alcohol presence with not enough flavour to balance it out.
