Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

This is a 2006 edition bottle, which seems to have become milder/smoother over the past year. Aroma is malty with a little bit of hops and alcohohol, taste is malty as well with a nice hop finish and a slight alcohol taste that seems to have lessened with age. Still nice and warming and always good in the winter.

Single from Total Wine. I’ve had a pretty good run with beers lately except for the MGD. This is a really good barleywine. Sweet, floral aroma. Flavor was intense caramel and tingly, spicy hops. Nice warming alcohol burn accompanied the robust flavor. Wished for a really good cigar to go with it. Excellent winter warmer.

I think I am addicted to barley wines. I really enjoyed this one and am surprised at some of the low ratings...Had on draft at Brews in Granville. Sweet and very woody up front, but I thought this one was pretty well blended and perfectly enjoyable...

Bottle sample at a tasting. 2.5 years old. Dark hazy amber with a small beige head. Aroma of malt, dark fruits and quite alot of alcohol. Sweet malt flavor with caramel and fruits. Medium to full body. Nice and very enjoyable but not very complex.

2007 bottle. Pours ruby with a small fizzy head. The usual barleywine aromas with a strong hint of nuttiness. Taste is smooth and silky, but kind of falls flat at the end. Nice try. BW Fest 1 of 5.

Nice lil barley wine Spices, nutmeg, coriander, caramel and molasses blend well with some spikey barley notes. Alcohol surfaces here and there. Wood roasted finish, and semi nutty. Ends with a fig like twist. Really well done! I think it’s time to try the others from this brewer.

Creamy caramel malts on the nose with hints of spicy pine. Pours a rich amber with little to no head. Malty up front, caramelly, brown sugar, with hints of a richer molasses in the background. Very good hop profile also, hints of pine with a citrusy finish, and decent bitterness to offset the big malt flavors. Alittle young, a little astringent can’t wait to try it again in a few years.

2007. Pours a dark, mahogany color with a nice, white head. Sweet, woody aroma, some caramel, a touch of pine, and alcohol. Big, sweet body, heavily malted, silky caramel, with a nice hop presence. Dry, alcoholic finish. Big.
