Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

bottle - 2007 batch. pours a deep amber with a tad bit of white head which transitions to no lacing at all. The aroma is filled with deep fruits and some sweet malt. Wonderful over the palate with a ton of flavors hitting the tongue... deep fruits including plums, raisins, pears, apple, and some dark cherries. There is also some caramel and a sweet malt presence throughout. Monster Ale feels almost like a port or light brandy... it has a very smooth and charismatic body that carries a bit of alcohol warmth in addition to an abundance of flavor. Mr. Oliver knows his beer.

Do not drink this young. Age for 4 years
Rating is only the better of the two tastings, the aged one.

Still a little boozy, but a lovely barley-wine aroma - with sweet dried figs. Nuttiness in the taste. Pretty mellow. Vert nice sniffer and sipper

Alcoholic nonsense. No subtleties of any kind in any aspect. An insult to the great barley wines that exist, hopefully an evolutionary dead-end of the broken "some is good therefore more is better" logic that many on the both sides of the Atlantic unfortunately cling to.

12oz. Bottle from 2005 (aged 2yrs.): Moderately sweet aroma. Smells of caramel malt, alcohol, dark fruit, brandy, and basic Barley Wine aroma. Poured amber in color with a hint of copper and a small, off-white head that diminished quickly. Clear. Lightly sparkling. Flavor is medium to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of alcohol, caramel malt, dark fruit, and brandy. VERY malty. Full body. Thick, viscous, very smooth texture. Almost no carbonation. Sweet, lightly salty, malt finish. Overall, I’d like to try this beer with out aging it so much.

Very nice tasting barley wine. It pours a little darker than the lager with decent head. Aroma is mostly the alcohol. It is a very drinkable barley wine.

Deep mahogany in colour, thin off-white coloured head, no lacing. The aroma is quite alcoholic, some caramel malts, citrus hops, quite sweet. The flavour is quite alcoholic and warming, fruity, caramel malts, dark fruits, moderate hop bite. Warming mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes very long, warming with a moderate sweetness. Even after 3 years this is still quite hot. Doesn’t pack a punch or the flavour of the top tier Barley Wines.

VERY decent barleywine. From the bottle pours dark ruby, almost no head to speak of. Nose is heavy on the raisins, significant malt backbone, strong sherry, a bit of citrus to round it out. Taste is similar, with heavy vinous notes. Alcohol is only really detectable in the last two or three sips. Quite enjoyable.
