Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

An aroma of dried fruit. A clean amber pour with little or no head. A flavor that is a little on the mediciny side. A bit of dried fruit a decent bitter finish. Pretty warm but not hardly hot, but the beer I’m drinking is pretty cool right now. A palate that is solid carbonation tries to be foamy but is not. A pretty good BW across the board.

2005 Bottle. Deep amber pour with tan head that diminishes quickly into halo of lace. Smells of alchol and malt. A bit of fruitiness on the initial taste. Some carmel and sweet malt as well. Hop bite is not very present. A little thin on the mouthfeel. A little heat in the finish. Ok, but this could probably still be put down for a few more years to develop.

June 2005 - Beer poured a clear deep amber with huge head. Nice lacing on glass as well. This beer does a fine job of masking the alcohol content, but it’s just too darned sweet for me. No distinguishable hop presence and just overwhelming sugar artificially sweet taste.

This monster ale was born in 2006 and shared with Taylor on August 13th, 2007. Pours a dark amber with a little, flimsy white head. Nose is sweet malts, vanilla, toffee, a little alcohol, caramel, some nuts. Flavor is very smooth, alcohol hardly noticed, sweet caramel, more vanilla, hardly any hop presence. This drank a lot easier than I expected. Alcohol very well hidden and controlled. Not the most complex for the style, but certainly a worthy candidate.

Fruit aroma with a toasted caramel taste a thin mouthfeel. Warm finish on this big ale. Pours copper with a cream head. A solid barley wine.

First of all, this didn’t drink much like a barley wine, so I won’t rate it as one. The initial flavour was of roasted malt and caramel with some nuts, that all together smells a bit like roasted coffee and caramelized toffee. There is a presence of dark fruits in the flavour, too. The hops weren’t as pronounced as expected. They appear mostly in the finish, which is very bitter and metallic. The body was a tad thin for a barley wine called "moster ale."

Flaske. 2005. lidt skum der hurtigt forsvinder. Uklar ravfarvet. En smule metallisk i duften, men smagen er god og har en fin balance i forhold til alkoholen.

this beer seem like a JV version of what a barley wine should be. the malts seem a little thin, the hops have pine flavor to them. their is some decent caramel flavors as well as a touch of nuts. Update 4/30/08 gave it another try it mellowed out nicely it does some character.
