Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

After having this beer, I became convinced that we need to have vintage rating available on the site. 2000 bottle sent by Drewbeerme, thanks! This was a spectacular example of an aged barleywine. The aroma is lots of wonderful melted caramel and toffee with light brown sugar and malts. Deep brown body with a thin head. The palate is delicously creamy and full. Taste is amazing! Tons of toffee, caramel, sweet fruits--raisins and plums. Absolutely top notch.

2005 batch, cracked open August of 2006. Scrapping my initial review for the following: 2006 Edition: Revisiting this one because I wasn’t satisfied with my initial thoughts on this brew. Glad I got this years batch because either it’s better, my taste has improved, or both because this beer is great. Beautiful cherry red color, fuzzy white film on top, splotchy lacing. Sugary malt scent with dark fruits and some medium floral hops. Sweet and creamy mouthfeel with a quick burn. Flavor is much better than I recall. Dark cherries, sherry, and sugary bready malts. Low bitterness, quite floral and really tasty.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Vintage 2004 at 11% ABV. Vaguely hazy, amber golden with a creamy, yellowish head. Fat aroma of overripe fruit and alcohol. Very full body with a smooth mouthfeel, lots and lots of sweetish caramel and overripe fruit. Lightly oxidized because of age making this very mellow and soft on the palate, madeirasized and a bit low in carbonation. Also the hops have mellowed. This has aged gracefully without losing its potent alcohol. 150506

Clear copper color, short head. Aroma of caramel malt, hop, some sweet anis. Light sweet taste, malty, anis, bitter, caramel. Although I’m not a big fan of barley wines, this one is quite ok.

Aroma of forets fruits, hops and caraml, winey malts. Hazy, red-brown coloured with a thin, off-white head. Taste is sweet, winey, hoppy, caramel malty with a fruit and anise touch. Quite nice.

12oz bottle from Coopers Seafood house in Scranton PA. Reddish brown color with medium head. I did not like this beer as much as i thought. I really like barley wines but this one lacked the complexity of some of the better ones. But not terrible.
