Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

2006 bottle. Aroma filled with alcohol, chocolate. Malts and hops fill the mouth, along with a subtle chocolate flavor and lingering alcohol. A nice beer.

12oz bottle. 2006. Clear and deep amber hued. Webbed bone white head. Sweet syrupy chocolate nose. Touch of bright red fruits. Full bodied with a grainy middle and a sweet citrusy hop finish. Lively with a touch of burnt malts. Maple and dark chocolate. Sticky. Nice burn mellowed out by the citrus hop notes. Milder citrus. Dual mix between the sweet malts and bitter hops. The sticky and crisp notes. Good palate. Malt dominant complexity but still good hop note. Fun drinking.

12 oz bottle...not a big fan of this, it reminds me more of a straight up beer than a barley wine

Growler of 2007: Pours a light amber in color with a small, white head. Slightly metallic aroma, citrusy hops. Bit of metal present in the flavor as well: dark, malty and slightly bitter. A bit of a vinous presence as it warms, similar to a dry chardonnay, but still not as complex as I would like. Probably needs to age.

Aroma was of citrus, hops, and lots of alcohol. From the smell it seemed like was going to be strong. Surprisingly it wasn’t like bad. It started off citrusy and had the alcohol finish. Not bad.

Tasted 2007-03-27. 2 years old bottle, 33 cl. Clear dark orange/red colour with off-white head. Aroma of hops, toffee and flowers. Surprisingly round taste of hops, burned sugar and grass. Alcohol very well hidden. I think this should be aged longer, but it’s quite good already!

Bottled. (vintage 2005) Pours a clear, copper with some carbonation resulting in a minimal beige rim of foam. One can smell the hops and alcohol, and it has beef-stock, citrus and some pine and herbal notes. It has a full, warming mouthfeel with flavors of beef-stock, alcohol, pronounced hoppiness, pine and citrus-notes. There’s also a good dash of sweetness present all the way. Long, piny, hoppy and alcohol finish. A really lovely beer as a night-cap, not the best choice for a drinking session. The alcohol is quite present, but not in an unpleasant way, still it would be nice to have it a bit rounded off, so maybe some more years of cellaring would do the trick. (070403)
