Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

Amber red body with a small ring of foam. Fruity aroma at the begining and more hoppy at the finish. Small notes of citrus and syrup gets more bitter at the middle. Very thick in the mouth almost like syrup. The finish is very caremely.

2005 vintage. Copper-red pour with little to no head. Malty aroma that becomes more wine-like and fruity when warmed. Big taste, moderately sweet and big on dried fruit. Some cherry and red-grapes. Alcohol is noticeable but muted for 11%. Pretty interesting. Pretty darn good, in fact.

Was unaware that is was a barleywine, so was surprised when I tasted it. Haven’t had enough experience with Barleywines to give it justice. Probably would have liked it more with a different food pairing (other than pizza)

Pours a hazy darker amber with little to no head. Very nice floral, sweet malty smell to it although it was quite mellow. Pretty sweet taste with anice bite to it, although it does smooth out near the finish. I get some darker citrus and sweet malts in there as well. Alcohol is pretty prominent in this one. Would love for them to mask that a little better, but this is name monster ale so maybe thats the intention.

Bottle. Deep amber/copper coloring with an off white small head that diminished quick. Faint nose of yeast, malt and hint of orange rind. Flavor was soft with a kick of peppery spice crispiness. Lingering malty aftertaste.

12 oz bottle I picked up on Columbus Day outside Cleveland at Chuck’s. Clear amber in color with a ring of a head. Malty nose, not very strong some sweetness and cookies come out as it warms. Malty flavors carmel, cherry, alcohol and a hint of chocolate. Nothing like barley wine to keep the insides warm in the dead Chicago winter.

Nice amber color with an offwhite head. Malty aroma,at first with some sourish notes. Nutty, milky but also with some citrus notes. Malty flavor, honey notes, very strong but without letting too much alcohol through,a bit vinous but most of all malty. Strong finish with some nice bitterness.

2005 bottle courtesy of boboski. Copper color with no head. Malt abounds, but an almost sweetish hop aroma makes it to the nose. Lingering soapy hop finish to the taste, but not sharp or aggressive. Things nicely melded as it warmed, but I still would’ve liked a greater hop presence in the taste. But overall a very good brew.
