cheeta (858), Langå, Denmark Jan 31, 2007 Heavy hoppy aroma. Off-white head color. Fair lacing. Mostly diminishing longevity. Clear red body. Moderate sweet initial flavor. Medium palate. RagallachMC (631), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Jan 30, 2007 Draft. Aroma: Rich, sweet maltiness with notes of raisins, brown sugar, toasted nuts, and some citrus hops. Appearance: Reddish amber in color and fairly clear. Light beige head was full and creamy with great retention for such a high abv beer. Good lacing. Flavor: Big malt sweetness with notes of caramel, dark fruits, citrus, toasted nuts, rye bread, pine, and earth. Hop flavors worked well with the maltiness. Medium bitterness was just enough to wash away some of the lingering sweetness. Well balanced. Palate: Full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Overall: A good barleywine that’s more in the English style. Malt was the star here with hops playing backup. Very nice. kumite56 (461), Cordova, Tennessee, USA Jan 30, 2007 Rich malty nose with fruity hopps and Hints of caramel. Appearance is nice with an good tan head on a coppery body. Flavor is heavily malty, caramel and alcohol. Very fruity as well. Good palate. MagooinPA (99), Warminster, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 27, 2007 2005 12oz pour. Nice head that went ’poof." Nice amber color with a nice malty nose. Complex nose of hops for a Barley Wine. Nice first flavor of raisens, plums, kinda like a good fruit cake(is there such a thing?). The abv is noticeable but warming + comforting considering it is 20F here in Philly. Nice nutty flavor with that abv warmth. Brooklyn is never a bad choice. hemya (2), USA does not count Jan 24, 2007 2006.
Pours to a thin white head. High on ABV but goes down very well, so drink carefully. A sweeter barley wine which does not come across as very hoppy!! NachlamSie (1630), Tennessee, USA Jan 23, 2007 Bottle courtesy of Tronraner. The pour lets a bit of light come through, it doesn’t appear as viscous as I would expect from a barley wine of this strength. The body is a lighter mahogany with a thin, white head on top. The aroma is just assertive enough and has sweet yeasty notes of bubble gum, apricots, wood, and caramel. The alcohol is fairly apparent, but not problematic. It is on the thinner side of barley wines. The finish brings out a bit of bourbon-like burn and a dry, earthy flavor. Monster Ale is certainly not one of the sweeter examples of the style and delivers a slightly fruity assortment of flavor notes accompanied by suggestions of tobacco or wood. Hey, it’s pretty darn good, but not mind-blowing. boboski (1095), Alabama, USA Jan 22, 2007 2005, consumed fresh. Sampled with creme brulee as suggested by Garrett Oliver. very lively and vinous aroma of sherry, port barrels, caramel malt, cookie dough, flowery hops, peaches, orange rinds, sherry and alcohol. Complex would be an understatement. Flavor is similar, expanding on the fruit notes to include melons. Also noted are tobacco, raisins and earthy tones. Palate is exceedingly smooth for such a young barleywine. Finishes very dry.
2000, consumed in early 2006. Sampled with homemade baked Alaska, a divine pairing. Noticeably thinner. Chocolate and caramel flavors abound in a very complex combination. The interplay of malts and alcohol is seemless, balancing the mouthfeel and finish very nicely. No signs of oxidation, fantastic. This was excellent at a young age as well as at six years old. bebop329 (27), USA Jan 20, 2007 Shared this barley wine with Pat....usually not my favorite but this one exceeded my expectations. The flavor are mild. Slightly hoppy with a honey finish. High ABV but you would never know by the taste. Easy to drink so be cautious about how much is consumed...hehe.
