Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

2003 Bottle. Poured a dirty brown with almost no head. Aromas of fruits and yeast? Not very barleywineish at all. Flavors of caramel, and toasted cookies, not much hop flavor at all, almost has a "belgian" flavor to it. I found this in a bottle shop recently and it obviously has been there a while, so the odd flavors may be to poor storage. Definitely not what I was expecting, but not terribly bad.

2005 bottle from SS winter 06. Pours a dark rusty orange color with a slightest bit or white head. Spicy, herbal nose with a backdrop of toffee and cookies. As it warms I would compare the aroma to a cherry danish. The flavor starts off with the same bakery type flavor and rolls to a middle of the road bitterness. The finish is very alcoholic and medicinal. Yikes. I’d also like a bit more body on here. Pretty thin. Not fowl, but certainly not to be sought out.

If you’ve ever wondered what toasted bread smells like on a beer, try this. It is overwhelming. There is a ton of caramel, and smoke. Almost no hops. Alcohol is evident. There’s also a weird vegetable flavor going on too. I’ve never had a beer taste like this, but it’s as off-putting as a Weyerbacher. Actually this tastes a lot like the Weyerbacher winter ale.

Cellared bottle 2005. Pours clear copper with a average head. Smelled of sweet fruit and molasses. Very little hops. Tasted the sweet fruit with some alcohol. Much better than when the bottles were new.

Oringial notes are lost. Aroma of dried fruit and nice hops. Very powerful and appetizing. Vanilla and toffee. Orangebrown. Sweet and strong flavor with a bittersweet balance leaning towards the sweet fullbodiedness.

It’s good. I just had the black chocolate stout right before it, so unfortunately it is a downgrade from that. I would get it to try it out, but the chocolate stout is the better buy.

Nice shiny packaging to entice and a nice big 10.8% that you can enjoy slowly, with syrupy goodness full of fruit and a vinous backbone offsetting deep malt flavors, although perhaps a little more flavor integration could benefit this - maybe more time in the bottle? Update: A 2005 drunk 04/08 shows nice integration. Aged very well, drink some 05 now if you have it. Bumping up overall.
