Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

I had the 07 version on draft at the Craft Ale House. I wasn’t really all that impressed with this beer, especially given some of the hype. The beer pours a dark copper color with an off-white head. There is an ample amount of lacing around the glass. The nose is full of fruits, especially grapes. There’s also a tiny bit of caramel and alcohol in the aroma. The body is fairly full, but smooth and drinkable. The flavors are mostly of fruits, again mostly of grapes, but with notes of alcohol, sugar and yeast. It’s certainly not one of my favorite barleywines.

Bottle from 2007. Reddish brown colour with a small beige head. Aroma: Sweet malt, caramel, fruitiness, vanila, alcohol. Taste: malty, fruity and sugary, caramel/toffee, cherries, alcohol, soft bitterness. Creamy mouthfeel. Warming alcohol in the finish. Nice english style barley wine. Probably much hoppier when fresh.

2008: A rich nutty brown ale with foam that forms in snow-like drifts. Very rich fruity aroma. Christmassy oranges and exciting cocktail cherries. A big flavour here. Almost like vermouth, spicy and heady. Huge range of rich fruits and malty notes. This is how a barley wine should really be. I’ve had a lot of weak imitations and beers claiming to be barleywines recently which have not had this exciting kick and depth. Something resolutely spanish here. Sangria like almost. I shall be returning tomorrow to grab some of this for the cellar.

This beer is definitly a monster of barleywine. It has a rich aroma and a dark amber color to it. The nose is nice and floral with some hints of malt, very basic, but strong. The flavor is full of caramel malt and citrus hops that bite your tounge. The booze is not was well hidden or masked as your would think there is definitlely a presance of it in this brew. Overall it is a monster beer and has a nice balance of carbonation and malt and hops. You drink a six pack of these and your in for a killer time, one that you wont regret but your liver will hate you for sure.

12oz bottle ’08, from Swolf3, thanks Wolf.
Medium copper pour, very clear, kind of an off-white head. Smell alot of hops up front, slight caramel anf some fruitiness. Very hoppy flavor as well, pretty much overpowers everything else, still quite good, would like to get some more for cellaring.
