Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

Bottle. Shiny clear chestnut colour. Malty and sweet caramelly flavour with peppery caramel aftertaste. Might be a bit cloying if not for the generous carbonation.

Bottle. Labeled 2009. Clear orange amber with disappearing white head. Aromas of caramel, alcohol, fruit with cherry, apple, grape and citrus notes prominent. Flavors of caramel, peanuts, cherry, apple, grape and plum. Alcohol seems to cover up flavor profile as the beer warms to room temp. Medium body with sticky mouthfeel and low carbonation. With budding complexity, going to cellar one.

Dark amber, great head for a barley wine. Not much in the aroma stands out to me. The taste is bitter sweet and surprising gentle for a barley wine. I expected something thicker - this one will go down easy.

Pours reddish with a nice head. Very citrusy and a good palate. This one will get you because it is very easy to drink. This is one of my favorites.

Bottle. Pours bright red-orange with very thin tan head, no lacing. Aroma is very mellow for a barley wine, caramel, cherry with a touch of hops. Flavor is dark fruits, grassy hops, and syrup. Finishes very hot with very little carbonation. Decent, would like to age one of these and see what happens.

( 12oz bottle thanks to mar) Pours clear orange with a light film of bubbles. Nose of hairspray, hops, and dirty water. Taste of light pine hops, earth and alcohol. Hot finish and low carbonation.

(sample) Pours a mahogany color liquid that has little to no head. Aroma is of tropical fruits cascade hops and booze. Has a grapefruit citrus hops taste. Complex caramel malt with notes of lemon, spiced rum. Flat carbonation, slick texture and medium to full body.

Pours really syrupy, with an orange brown color. Aroma is of hops and ’barleywine’ (not sophisticated enough with this style to pick out the notes). First taste is quite bitter and then turns to sweetness with a long finish. To be honest, I haven’t had enough barleywines to distinguish how this is better than the rest that I’ve tried.

Red-orange pour with minimal head. Aroma is certainly of an American style barleywine; nice lemon, grapefruit, and other citrus hop notes prevail, along with bubblegum, biscuit, and caramel malt. Flavor is also quite hoppy, with some definitely alcohol presence and nice complex fruit character. Really nice palate; thick and sticky, lovely for the style. Solid brew from Brooklyn.
