COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

2005- Dark amber with short lasting head leaving white, almost sea, foam. Strong nose of an alcoholic pine forest. The taste is huge but predominatly hops, and still a little too sweet. Finishes very harsh and very alcoholic. Next time try aged.

Bottle 330ml. Pours dark clear copper-brown. No head. Weak but pleasant aroma of sweet wine, soy sauce, malt and some banana notes. Mouth feel is velvety and thick, no carbonation, alcoholic and sour tang in top of throat. Taste of wine, complex and rich, sweet, some wine-like tannins and fruity sourness. Alcoholic notes, banana and chocolate liqueur. Weak roasted flavors, some wooden, aged notes. Complex, warming and thick, mostly sweet with gentle bitterness and slight sourness. Very winey/liquery, sherry, fruity. Bitter-sweet tannic after taste. A strong complex sipping beer for wine and liqueur lovers, indeed a barley wine more then a beer. Very good.

12 oz bottle that reads ’Born in 2012’ on a sliver background label. This is a rich and hearty lae that lives up to its reputation. What a shame it’s been retired.

UPDATED: JUN 15, 2014 2012 bottle. Aroma: Intense caramel/toffee malts that have a spirit-like quality; a little citrus lingers in the background. Appearance: Hazy amber pour with a bubbly bone head that dissipates into a bubbly ring. Flavor: A little citrus up front, but the malts don’t wait long to drop the hammer; pretty intense and still has a lot of vigor. Alcohol is pretty apparent. Palate: Medium body, creamy texture, flat carbonation, long finish. Overall: Probably opened this one too early; I think it could go for 2-3 more years and have room left for refinement. Still, it didn’t strike me as a peer of the English barleywines i’ve had the pleasure of trying.

2012 bottle. Incredibly sweet nose of caramel, toffee, light oak, and a hint of cinnamon. Pours a clear medium copper. Sweet (almost sugary) taste with caramel, brown sugar, a mellow, boozy acidity, and a bit of sharp oak. Medium body and a bit sweet, watery mouthfeel. Solid.

"Born in 2012" - Light brown colour with thin but lasting head. Aroma is syrupy sweet with lots of boozy dried fruit rather like a sherry. Flavour is similarly sweet and rich with dried fruit dominating. There are some woody and spicy notes lingering in the background too. Quite thick and warming.

Bottle with Benh at the Bow Bar. Good times. Pours Amber with a cream head. Loads of sweetness with a novel ammount of hops to balance it out. I feel that barleywines have a tendency to get sickly after a while so half a 330ml bottle is more than enough for me.
