Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

2003 Bottle: This brew pours a pretty dark amber/mahogany color with a thin and quickly dissipating light beige head. Thin and quick lacing. Aroma of malt, toffee and alcohol. Rather rich with a bold malt flavor. Warming alcohol aspect is maintained throughout, yet it never becomes a hindrance to the drinkability. The finish is hoppy enough to keep it from becoming cloying, and overall this is a well-done Barley Wine.

2001 Monster Ale, bought at brewery. First aroma leaps into my nose with a pack of Juicy Fruit gum in its pocket. Decent, sticky body, but with a hint of a letdown coming on. Still, some zing on the tongue. A satisfying and complete barleywine, with all the flavors I would hope for, malty but complex. original rating: 7-4-8-5-15. // Re-rate of 2004 in January 2006. Tobacco with a lot of English style showing. I didn’t give this a full rating but thought it would have come out as a 3.6.

2003 bottle. Translucent reddish brown, sweetish alcohol-malty taste. Some hops. Warms my belly and has an alcohol-bitter finish.

I find it amazing that even in a beer with as much malt flavor, hop character and high alcohol as the Monster, that the Matt house character still comes through. Still, an excellent barleywine although the bottle I’m tasting now suffers from a slight oxidation problem. Odd, since it’s a 2001 and there’s some yeast in the bottle. I’m a big fan of the Brooklyn beers, but give me a pint of any of their beers brewed locally and poured on draft over these contract bottles.

Rich malty nose with fruity hopps and Hints of caramel. Appearance is nice with an good tan head on a coppery body. Flavor is heavily malty, caramel and alcohol. Very fruity as well. Good palate.

Finally broke out a 2002.It is quite the pour. Great deep reddish brown color. As it warms it loses a little of the alcohol fire. Maltiness reigns over a great barleywine. I wish I had another aging....

Bottle. Surprised I liked this. Really smooth mouthfeel and the 10 percent kick is fairly well hidden.

Enjoyed via 12 oz bottle (Vintage 2007). I have enjoyed this example several times over the past six months. Initially, the nose and palate were hoppy, almost too much so. Over time, the hop aroma, flavor, and bitterness have faded dramatically. The latest tasting was one of maltiness over hoppiness, almost to the extent of balance, albeit a full-flavored balance. Overall, a well-crafted American-style Barley Wine.
