Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

Nice lil barley wine Spices, nutmeg, coriander, caramel and molasses blend well with some spikey barley notes. Alcohol surfaces here and there. Wood roasted finish, and semi nutty. Ends with a fig like twist. Really well done! I think it’s time to try the others from this brewer.

Bottle. 2005. Clear dark amber colour with a small tan head. Sweet malty slightly hoppy aroma, with some hints of alcohol. Sweet malty flavor with some dark fruits, raisins, caramel and toffee. Dry bitter aftertaste with some toffee hints.

2005 Bottle from Barley Wine, Copenhagen. Clear oragne/ruby with a vinous aroma, some peppery hop. It’s quite a well balanced, subdued, understated barley wine. Alcohol is well hidden. Some syrupy malts. Reminds me of Fullers Vintage ale. Good toffee and plum and rich fruit. Hops are peppery, white pepper, but balanced vs the malt.

Bottled in 2004. Deep red-orange color with a fine head. Strong malty aroma with caramel and fruit. Some malty caramel sweetness well balanced with bitterness and a bit of yeast. Rich and warming with a prominient alcohol character. A very nice traditional-styles barley wine.

2004 bottle. Deep and rich, smokey and full. Its got a very grainy mouthfeel. Alcohol is present in the nose and taste, but also very sweet malt through the entire beer. Dark colour, white small head.

(’07 bottling) Nice deep copper colour with little to no head. Aroma is sweet and boozy. Cherry & Apricot fruit tones, cotton candy. Flavour carries dark cherry cough syrup (slightly medicinal though not much) backed by smokey malt. Alc. comes through strong yet smooth in the finish.
