Fairly sweet flavor with some nuts, plums, strong bitterness, some fusels. Strong warming alcohol presence. dankfor20 (193), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 19, 2005 Latest 04 batch. Deep clear coppers and ambers, thick off white head. Nose held notes of citrus, orange peel, fuzzy fruit, toffee, toast, with a slight cherry edge to it all. Snappy citric / fruity hops start the hop parade, followed by some dirty earthy hop notes, and a slight sweet caramel malt to round this out nicely. Decent balance, but not perfect. Age will do wonders on this one I’m sure. Medium bodied, light carbonation, dry warming, earthy hop finish. Good stuff year in, year out....

It was also creamy to my palate and my lips. I like this creamy beer. Also, this beer is easily drinkable for a barley wine. It does not have overwhelming alcohol or hop flavor, so it is not the typical "take one sip and wait two minutes" barley wine. morehops (39), Pennsylvania, USA

The pour lets a bit of light come through, it doesn’t appear as viscous as I would expect from a barley wine of this strength. The body is a lighter mahogany with a thin, white head on top. The aroma is just assertive enough and has sweet yeasty notes of bubble gum, apricots, wood, and caramel. The alcohol is fairly apparent, but not problematic. It is on the thinner side of barley wines. The finish brings out a bit of bourbon-like burn and a dry, earthy flavor. Monster Ale is certainly not one of the sweeter examples of the style and delivers a slightly fruity assortment of flavor notes accompanied by suggestions of tobacco or wood. Hey, it’s pretty darn good, but not mind-blowing. MacDaddyOJake (274), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 22, 2006 On tap at Capital Ale House. Hoppy, citrusy, and slightly fruity aroma with a hint of sherry. The smell says its gonna kick your butt! Strong flavors that were present in the smell along with burnt offerings and a warming finish. Rather intense, perhaps it could have aged a bit. Lovely none-the-less, a good barely wine.
