COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

UPDATED: MAY 22, 2003 2001 Vintage:This beer had a nice malty profile followed by a nice hop finish. I feel that it is a bit small for a barley wine style for my liking, but overall it was a good beer. I just re-rated this beer, because I just had my second bottle that has been aging for another year. The malt profile has held up really well. Sweet and fruity. The hops are hidden well in the backround, but for an English style Barleywine, this has aged wonderfully. I highly suggest finding one.

Bottle. Amber clear-ish. Earthy cedary, sweet dark malty (raisins) nose, some greenery too. Full medium body. Sweet malty, but not too much, smooth dark bread, or cake actually, molasses. Flavourful, nice. As a barley wine a bit dull though. Or could be more intensive. Isn’t cloying or that hard to drink though.

Orange brown hazy pour with thin tan head. Aroma is sweet raisin and caramel. Taste is overly sweet raisin. Burnt raisin if that is even a thing. Very good, just a bit too sweet for me.

2007 bottle. Very cloudy burnt orange and no cap. Aroma of caramel, raisin, slight licorice, candied sugar. Quite oxidized unfortunately. Taste is watered down sweet. Pretty much a bottle of wet paper. Too bad. Was gifted this, so I’m not sure what storage this went through before I got it last year.

bottle with thanks to pivnizub! Hazy pale yellow, creamy white head. Hoppy nose. Sweet and malty, quite full-bodied with a touch of alcohol and some grassy-resiny hops. Shy fruity touch, citrus mainly.

UPDATED: JUL 25, 2014 Bottle 355ml. Pours dark clear copper-brown. No head. Weak but pleasant aroma of sweet wine, soy sauce, malt and some banana notes. Mouth feel is velvety and thick, no carbonation, alcoholic and sour tang in top of throat. Taste of wine, complex and rich, sweet, some wine-like tannins and fruity sourness. Alcoholic notes, banana and chocolate liqueur. Weak roasted flavors, some wooden, aged notes. Complex, warming and thick, mostly sweet with gentle bitterness and slight sourness. Very winey/liquery, sherry, fruity. Bitter-sweet tannic after taste. A strong complex sipping beer for wine and liqueur lovers, indeed a barley wine more then a beer. Very good.

12 oz bottle that reads ’Born in 2012’ on a sliver background label. This is a rich and hearty lae that lives up to its reputation. What a shame it’s been retired.
