COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

Bottle. The pour was a murky medium brown with a small (less than 1 finger) creamy off white head that was fully diminishing and had poor lacing. The aroma was of a dark bread malt and a sweet doughy yeast with notes of caramel, maple syrup, dark fruit, a mild alcohol tinge and a slight medicine odor. The taste was moderately sweet with a big caramel note early on and finished with a hint of maple syrup and a strong dark fruit presence towards the end. The flavor lasted a decent duration after the swallow, letting one enjoy the mild sweet fruity taste. Mouthfeel was just a bit beyond medium in body and extremely creamy in texture with an almost flat carbonation. Overall an awesome fruity brew that was extremely smooth and easy going down, aging did this beer some serious justice...

Bottled in 2007. So it is a 7 year old beer. Color is murky brown caramel. Little to no lacing. Aroma is amazing. Caramel, figs, vanilla, toffee. Flavor is similar. Caramel, figs, toffee. As expected, very little hop presence. Slight hop finish. Very slight. Almost cask-beer mouthfeel. Can’t believe how well this held up. Awesome.

Bottle 330ml. Hazy reddish-orange with small beige head. Quite intense sweet aroma, raisin, fruity (peach, apricot), syrupy, dulce de leche, some herbs, faint onion notes, some alcohol notes. Very sweet flavor, bourbon, quite alcoholic, sugary, raisin notes, some fruitiness, milky, syrupy, slightly buttery. Creamy texture, light carbonation, medium to full-bodied. Very good although it’s too sweet.

I was pleased to find this on tap on the South Side of Chicago. Pours a clear caramel color with small off-white head and not much lacing. Aroma is full of fruitcake, caramel, and brown sugar. Taste is sweet with a bitter boozy finish. Body is full. This one is a sipper for sure.

2012er Barleywine mit stolzen 10,1% Umdrehungen. Kupferfarben mit leicht bräunlicher Krone. Malziges Aroma, etwas Honig und Karamell. Im Mund wieder Malz und Karamell, Bratapfel und Sherry. Schöne Nachspeise nach einem guten Essen.

330ml bottle served in a tulip glass. A: Pours a beautiful deep clear amber color forming a small yellow head. Low retention and only few lacings left S: Sweet and fruity in the nose. Toffee and caramel. Dark fruits. Raisins mainly. End is composed of flowery American hops T: Sweet as a barley wine should be. Fruity too. Toffee. Caramel malts backbone. End is bitter hoppyness. Not much of alcohol can be felt given the high ABV. Warming beer. Molasses M: Full creamy molasses body. Low carbonation. Sweet upfront and a hoppy bitter aftertaste O: Good drinkability. Good quality Brooklyn beer [ BA Review @ 8/15/2012 ]
