COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

12-oz bottle. Appearance: Pours a rich amber. Like an southern sweet tea, and with a foamy that faded into a tight, neat bubble ring around the glass. Aroma: Cherries soaked in alcohol. Possibly a bit of mango, but its rather difficult to smell around the alcohol. Taste: Hoo-boy! Very sherry-like in flavor, with bit of smoke in there. Hmm. I’m not really getting any clear cut malt or hop signals beyond the alcohol fumes. Long, spicy finish that eventually begins to erode the back of the throat. Palate: Medium body. A little astringent. Overall: OK. The alcohol burn was a little off-putting for me. Not exactly what I expect from a Barley wine. It was more like a Belgian. Not bad but there are other readily available Barley wines I would choose over this. But it tasted young and fresh. Perhaps a little aging would do. I am not set up for that though so I my preference would be for a BW that has a more finished taste.

Bottle (10,1%). Dark golden, hazy, small to average and fully diminishing head. Moderate to full, malty - lightly grainy and sugary sweetish aroma, some caramel and dark fruits, light herbal hoppyness and alcohol. Body is medium to full, malty and sweetish flavor, some caramel and light dark fruits, light - some herbal hoppyness, light alcohol. Finish is average, malty - lightly grainy and sweetish, light caramel and light dark fruits, light - some herbal hoppyness, light - some alcohol. BW with caramel and decent bitterness. Not big fan of the style, but this one is not overly too sweet (with help from 10,1% and bitterness).

355cc bottle poured into glass. Hazy dark amber color, with small off white light brown head that doesn’t stay for long. Full body, medium-high carbonation. Sweet malty taste. Medium bitterness. High ABV is very obvious. Overall quite nice, but not amazing.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2014 BOTTLE 355ML from Boystout’s Israeli aunt. Look: cloudy read-amber, small beige head. Aroma: rich, intense sweet and tart dried fruit - cranberries? Taste: sweet and sour dried fruit, some alcohol, spicy phenolic bitterness.

Bottle. Amber clear-ish. Earthy cedary, sweet dark malty (raisins) nose, some greenery too. Full medium body. Sweet malty, but not too much, smooth dark bread, or cake actually, molasses. Flavourful, nice. As a barley wine a bit dull though. Or could be more intensive. Isn’t cloying or that hard to drink though.

Orange brown hazy pour with thin tan head. Aroma is sweet raisin and caramel. Taste is overly sweet raisin. Burnt raisin if that is even a thing. Very good, just a bit too sweet for me.

2007 bottle. Very cloudy burnt orange and no cap. Aroma of caramel, raisin, slight licorice, candied sugar. Quite oxidized unfortunately. Taste is watered down sweet. Pretty much a bottle of wet paper. Too bad. Was gifted this, so I’m not sure what storage this went through before I got it last year.

bottle with thanks to pivnizub! Hazy pale yellow, creamy white head. Hoppy nose. Sweet and malty, quite full-bodied with a touch of alcohol and some grassy-resiny hops. Shy fruity touch, citrus mainly.

A- Pours a orangish brown with a light tan head S- Caramal and malt, definately get some sweetness T- Caramel malts with a smooth sweetness to it. M- Medium with good carbonation. O- This beer is very straight forward and if you wanted a barley wine this definately fits the style.
