Try the new Brewmasters Reserve: Smoked Weissbock. Bamberg, the central town in the Franconia region of northern Bavaria, is home to one of the world’s most unique beer styles – smoked beer or “rauchbier”. The barley malt is dried over beechwood fires, taking on a smoky quality that infuses the beer brewed from it. Smoked lagers are common in Franconia, but there’s a further specialty as well – smoked wheat beer. Only the barley malt is smoked, while the wheat is malted normally. This gives the beer a lightly smoky quality which is a perfect complement to the fruitiness imparted by the weissbier yeast. These beers have inspired us to bring you something more special still – Brooklyn Smoked Weissbock. At the doppelbock strength of 8%, this beer is full-bodied and complex, retaining the light acidity of the wheat balanced against fruit. Underneath is the light beechwood smoke, making this a wonderful beer with to enjoy with food. The palate finishes dry and spritzy. Try it with any pork dish (especially barbecue), traditional Mexican dishes, robust seafood such as monkfish, and Chinese dishes featuring black bean sauce. Malt: German two row smoked barley malt, German wheat malt, Belgian aromatic malts, caramalt. Hops: German Perle ABV: 8%

Poured a murky brown. Slightly orange tinge. Appeared to be essentially flat without much of any head. Nose was malty and wheaty witha slight underpinning of smokiness. Flavor rocked. Strong wheat tones with a smoke presence that reminded me of burnt wheat toast. Heavy and sweet malts with a slight tang to balance it all out. Slightly citrus too like diluted Orangina. Served extremely cold, perhaps too cold. Medium body that thickened a bit as the beer warmed. Great beer.

Thanks to Shigadeyo for bring a growler of this to the Tennessee Spring(ish) Tasting held in Knoxville, TN on 3/10/2007. This starts out with a small white head over a slightly hazy orange/amber body. The aroma is malt based with notes of vanilla and subtle smoke. Sweet and smooth flavor and palate.

Draught at KØ07. The aroma reminds me of Aventinus, lots of sweet banana esters. Very hazy brown colour. Very small creamy head. Good sour banana flavour with notable smokiness. The carbonation is not high, but even so still seems hard.

(On tap) Slightly hazy amber golden with a dense, off-white head. Aroma of banana - the smoke you have to imagine. Fairly full-bodied with sweetish banana notes and cloves. Sweetish, lightly caramlish finish with only the faintest whiff of smoke. 110507

On draught at Copenhague beerfestival 2007. Poors a hazy amber coloured beer with a huge everlasting head. Aroma’s of bananas and notes of smoked malts. The taste gives us the little clovyness from a well performed low mash shedule. Bananas present again with soft not of smoked malts. Extremely well balanced, great bear.

A Mes rate: Draught @ Københavnske Øldage. We were absolutely stunned by this. I’m also stunned by the up and down rates this gets. Much as I like to dismiss out of hand anything that is American, there is no denying that I loved every minute of this. Lovely estery banana aroma with a superb delicate smokey note. Glorious hazy amber appearance. Flavour is simply awesome. Yes it’s just a weissbock with some added smokey character and you know exactly what to expect but christ on a bike it’s just superb. I just can’t believe it’s this good. Wonderfully soft and well rounded. Amazing stuff.
