Try the new Brewmasters Reserve: Smoked Weissbock. Bamberg, the central town in the Franconia region of northern Bavaria, is home to one of the world’s most unique beer styles – smoked beer or “rauchbier”. The barley malt is dried over beechwood fires, taking on a smoky quality that infuses the beer brewed from it. Smoked lagers are common in Franconia, but there’s a further specialty as well – smoked wheat beer. Only the barley malt is smoked, while the wheat is malted normally. This gives the beer a lightly smoky quality which is a perfect complement to the fruitiness imparted by the weissbier yeast. These beers have inspired us to bring you something more special still – Brooklyn Smoked Weissbock. At the doppelbock strength of 8%, this beer is full-bodied and complex, retaining the light acidity of the wheat balanced against fruit. Underneath is the light beechwood smoke, making this a wonderful beer with to enjoy with food. The palate finishes dry and spritzy. Try it with any pork dish (especially barbecue), traditional Mexican dishes, robust seafood such as monkfish, and Chinese dishes featuring black bean sauce. Malt: German two row smoked barley malt, German wheat malt, Belgian aromatic malts, caramalt. Hops: German Perle ABV: 8%

Tap. A hazy amber-yellow with a creamy yellowish head. Aroma is sweet with a surprisingly powerful banana note amongst the smokyness. Flavour begins sweet and manages to put the smokyness into the aftertaste. Quite nice.

UPDATED: MAY 18, 2007 Draught @ Københavnske Øldage 2007 in Copenhagen. Poured by Garrett Oliver him self :o)). Hazy amber color with a large frothy fair lacing mostly lasting off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy yeasty, banana, bubble gum, caramel, notes of smoke. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet with a average duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. Very nice Weizebock ;o))

Draught. Amber coloured. Unclear. Dense light brown head. Light smoke, fruits, light alcohol, yeast and spice in the aroma. Flavour as well is light smoked. Has a distinct yeast and spice charachter. Fruits is there and some vague caramel notes. Is medium to full bodied. Ends on a quite wheaty and deliciously smoked note. Very good one.

Small bubbled beige head, hazy amber body; Beautiful soft nose, lots of banana, lots of yeast, a very little smoke and something malty bocky soft; Soft textured body with a soft carbonation, very balanced great deep body; Long bitter bocky very weizen aroma filled finish. Great beer!

Out of the growler in the parking lot at ’07 Dark Lord Day. Murky orange color with no head to speak of. The nose reminded me of banana cream pie with puffed wheat and only a hint of smoke. The smoke was only suggested in the flavor, appearing in the finish only as it warmed. It has the traditional banana flavors and clove spiciness for a German wheat, but it is pretty subtle for a smoked beer.

Københavnske Øldage 07. Orange-golden, hazy. The aroma has notes of spice, fruit and a little smoke. The flavour only has weak notes of smoke, a lot more notes of flower, fruit, banana and a hint of coriander. It’s fruity and nice, but too weak smoke-wise. 2089

Draught at Københavnske Øldage. Hazy amber, rich persistant head. Toffeeish banana aroma. Sweet and phenolic with some syrup and very careful smokiness. Too sweet to be refreshin, too careful flavourwise to entertain. Falls between the chairs.

Draft. A hazy orange-amber beer with a lazing orange head. The aroma is nice with notes of smoke, peaches, and oranges, as well as hints of rope. The flavor is sweet and very fruity - especially oranges, but also with light notes of wheaty, banana, smoke, and alcohol, leading to a dry wheaty end. Quite nice - but more smoke would suit my tastebuds.
