COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Try the new Brewmasters Reserve: Smoked Weissbock. Bamberg, the central town in the Franconia region of northern Bavaria, is home to one of the world’s most unique beer styles – smoked beer or “rauchbier”. The barley malt is dried over beechwood fires, taking on a smoky quality that infuses the beer brewed from it. Smoked lagers are common in Franconia, but there’s a further specialty as well – smoked wheat beer. Only the barley malt is smoked, while the wheat is malted normally. This gives the beer a lightly smoky quality which is a perfect complement to the fruitiness imparted by the weissbier yeast. These beers have inspired us to bring you something more special still – Brooklyn Smoked Weissbock. At the doppelbock strength of 8%, this beer is full-bodied and complex, retaining the light acidity of the wheat balanced against fruit. Underneath is the light beechwood smoke, making this a wonderful beer with to enjoy with food. The palate finishes dry and spritzy. Try it with any pork dish (especially barbecue), traditional Mexican dishes, robust seafood such as monkfish, and Chinese dishes featuring black bean sauce. Malt: German two row smoked barley malt, German wheat malt, Belgian aromatic malts, caramalt. Hops: German Perle ABV: 8%

On tap at a Capone’s tasting. Pours a lightly hazy orange amber with an average off white creamy head that left some lacing. Aroma of banana, clove, citrus and some light smoke. Flavors of the same plus some graininess, wheat and more smoke in the flavor than in the aroma.

Draft at the Dilly Deli. Poured dark reddish brown with an large fizzy off-white head that was mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Heavy complex roasted toffee smoke woody and small alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a creamy texture. Medium complex sweet flavor with a heavy smooth bittersweet finish of long duration. This is a standout beer and good for #2200.

Draught. Pours a cloudy amber with a fading white head. The aroma is rich of sweet banana, bubble gum, and wheat bread with light spices. I couldn’t pick up much smokiness just by taking a sniff. Upon having a taste, I do find the smoked meat qualities more apparent. Initially, I’m greeted with honey, cloves then a bit of smoky meat, then a more acidic, citrusy finish like pineapple. This bears a striking resemblance to Thanksgiving ham. Somehow, it’s still pretty refreshing and makes an enjoyable drink.

Pours amber/copper with an off-white head. Aroma of spices, fruit, and alcohol. The flavor is banana, smoke, spices, citrus, smooth alcohol, and mildly carbonated. Good body, good brew.

On Tap at Barcade, Brooklyn, NY. I actually didn’t like this one so much even though I do like smoked beers. The aroma reminds me of a nice banana citrusy weisse beer with a bit of smoked ham thrown in. It just seemed to get worst as I drank it. Initially I tasted a lot of the yeast, banana, citrus, spice characteristics which was nice cold and refreshing but as I drank this, the smoky flavors and the sweet sugary flavors seem to become more dominant and I felt it didn’t go well with the wheat malts and I could not finish it. I’m still a little confused about this one...

Brooklyn Smoked Weissbock pours a cloudy golden orange/amber color. It has a small off-white head and leaves a residual thin and frothy crown. Banana, wheat, light fruit, and delicate smokiness can be found in the aroma. The flavor is much like aroma and moderately sweet. Up front the flavor has banana, clove spice, wheat, and some fruitiness. The finish as a little more dry and has a really well integrated smoked character. The alcohol is very well hidden. This beer has a medium body, smooth and full mouthfeel. I love smoked beers and this one is very well done without being overly smoky/charred. There are also many nice complexities in the beer that can be attributed to its wheat beer/bock base. So good! I need more before it’s gone... 1/2 gallon growler (draught) from Party Town. I am definitely going back to get more of this great beer...

Tap at HDG. Goldish yellow with a small but tight head. Aroma is the obvious banana and clove but theres also soft, warm fruits like mango and papaya. Theres absolutely no smokiness that I notice. Theres some more flavors like peach and nice whole oats. Tasty but lacking. Too sweet.

Tap @ Hop Devil Grill. Hazy copper color with a medium off-white head. Pleasant and smooth smoked aroma with fruity notes and light bubble gum. The flavor was fruity with a wheaty lemon character. Bubble gum as well. Light to medium bodied.

Tap at barcade - despite what certain local ratebeerians think (eugene!), I do like smoked beers, so this is not a poor rating based on personal aversion to style - looks: hazy orange with quite an impressive head - smells: like bacon, band aids and marmalade - tastes: like band aids, burned hickory branches and bubble gum - not sure what everyone sees in this.

Tap @ Hop Devil: Nice hazy amberish/deep orange pour with a stable off white head. The aroma is straight sweet banana. The flavor is also very sweet. A candy malt profile. Huge ripe banana sweetness dominates this brew. Slightly estery with a clove hint. Sweet and simple. This stuff is not smoked at all. It’s basically a sweet dunkel weiss in my opinion. Nothing great.
