I was curious to try this, since it is supposedly made with a rare breed of Japanese hops. The ace of diamonds decorates the label. Dark blonde pour with a big topper of froth. The aroma is very nice at first - fresh, sweet, citrusy hops - but then it turns a bit soapy and yeasty after a few minutes in the glass. Like a good saison, this ale is rustic and funky. There are a number of elements that complicate the flavor. The label says it is a golden saison made with Belgian yeast, which makes sense to my tastebuds. The label goes on to call it sunshine in a glass, and there I disagree. It is good, with notes of lemon zest, chamomile, mint, and malt. The hops are pleasantly bitter and not harsh. A good saison/golden ale yes, but a Sorachi Ace spectacular? Not quite.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ml bottle shared by Bill. Pour is a hazy golden color with a well formed off white head. Even in a tasting glass, it was quite lasting. Aroma is the hops initially, spicy and herbal, followed by a more traditional maltiness, and picking back up in the finish with earthiness and more of the hops. The taste follows, very active and herbal / spicy hops along with the base malts. The taste also has some lemon citrus sweetness that I did not detect in the nose. Flavors are decently integrated, though this is mostly about the Sorachi. Palate is medium bodied, dry finish, hoppy aftertaste. I was glad I had a chance to try this, thanks Bill.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
750ml brown bottle, corked. Golden in colour, hazy. Fully formed thick and billowy cap. Leaves a good amount of foamy sheet lacing on the sides of the glass. Aroma has a nice attack of spicy hops up front, strong herbal notes, grassy, some lemon and orange sweetness. Flavour is herbal, spicy and grassy with lemon peel. Clean and dry finish. Hoppy and herbal aftertaste. Medium body, smooth mouthfeel, tight beaded carbonation. Nice presentation from the bottle to the glass. Very drinkable, I am an instant fan of this hop. One of my favourite beers I tried in 2010.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle/750ml - Pours a very light straw yellow in color with a medium very white head that sticks around for a while producing some lacing on the glass. Aroma is mostly an interesting grassy hops and mild of malts. Flavor is also strong of grassy hops, citrus and some malt understructure. Light, refreshing with plenty of hop flavor and mild bitterness. No evidence of the alcohol *VERY* drinkable...

Shared with Brian the Beer Pimp, Uncle Steve, the one and only Celticbrew and the Ace of Spades, Drbayern. Pours a light yellow with a nice light head. Arona is grassy, almost hay like in aroma. Great mouthfeel. Taste was hoppy, somewhat piney, and grassy. There was a good aftertaste from the Hops!

1.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20
750 mL bottle served in flute- poured a somewhat turbid hazy and sunbathed yellow a bried tint of orange, lively and hearty carbonation, one finger white head quickly bubbled away but still left a small wafer to enjoy. Aroma of straw, earth, yeast, various spices, and my old home. Hits the mouth with strong and medium body, malt is there for a split second before a wave of biting spice comes in with soap laced in it, some lingering spice and bubblegum on the lasting finish. Why the low score? Not a big fan of soap unless it’s for my clothes or my body.
