3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Appearance: orange and bright under a soft off-white head which fades into a thin layer bordered by a solid collar.
Nose: mint, ginger – ginger is heavy and intense – followed by spice and caramelization. Warm honey. Oak and scotch and wafts of salty peat much like ocean spray. Thyme, basil, grains of paradise followed by earth rich in greenery – ferns and moss.
Palate: caramelized and raw ginger all over. Raw lemon along with the essence of lemoncello in the breath which also mingles with ginger. Mint, sage, and bay leaves. Medium weight and clean mouthfeel. Raw oak, sea spray, ocean, seaweed, iodine, and a wee bit of Scotland. A sense of time and place – jazz, prohibition, speakeasy, zoot suits.
Final Thoughts: I loved this beer. Like all (or at least most) Brewmaster Reserve beers the Concoction changed on a weekly basis in terms of flavor profile dominance. That alone brings out new flavor profiles and abstractions and combinations. As a single-malt fanatic and novice cocktailarian I wholly appreciated this cocktail inspired beer. In tasting this beer I now want to taste the cocktail which inspired it. I see a lot of online ‘boo-hissing’ of this beer and while it might be what we expect of ‘beer’ isn’t that quite frankly the whole point of the Brewmaster Series? To explore the beery unexplored? Garrett is a beer geek foodie cocktailarian cigar aficionado etc etc… Garrett is a burgundian. Garrett is a flavorholic and flavor explorer. I can relate. To all those who ‘boo-hissed’ this beer, all that much more for me.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 6/20
16 ounce pint - $5.75 at Taco Mac in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Appearance: Served up a clouded, dirtied amber body with a ½ inch of off-white head and a multitude of effervescence streams along the sides of the glass.
Smell: Peated malt and toasted grains sprinkled with lemon juice and recklessly wrapped with a strange, medicinal scent of a phenol and liniment dosed rags being shoved in your face.
Taste: Smokey peat malt flecked with a few crumbs of sugar. Then, there enters a sharp, rubber-based baby bottle nipple phenolic note, conceivably coming from off the peat malt. A squirt of lemon, a sliver of pickled ginger, then some jagged florals before the bitterness enters. An ungraciously medicinal beer as your near the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Highly carbonated.
Overall: A demanding, conceptually interesting beer in need of a tweak or two, but, until then, one is more than enough for me, thanks.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at The Farmers’ Cabinet in Philadelphia.
Pours a dark golden orange color with a two finger, frothy wihite head that slowly fades into a lasting ring. Splotches of soapy lacing left behind.
Herbal, spicy aroma with a ton of ginger and lemon peel along with some earthy funk and light frut. Pale malt underneath.
Medium bodied with a slick, silky mouthfeel with hints of lavender and honey as well as some earthy funk, zesty spice and subtle buttery diaceytl. Lots of ginger and zesty lemon along with some earthy grass and light fruit. Really weird but decent.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
On tap in Calgary! The beer scene is improving. Dark dirty orange-amber. Medicinal herbal event is off putting with a note of rubber as well crazy herbal Buckleys and gin flavour with a hint of eucalyptus . I’ll come back for this when I have a cold.

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
On tap at Flying Saucer. Pours a clear orange gold with a small creamy white head leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is a floral pine hop. Medium mouthfeel with a dry lemon and rubber. Not much going on with this one.

1.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 4/20
The only rating I did from my birthday event at Mekong. Third beer in - which is the only way I finished this - if it had been my first, I would have dumped it. Yeesh, this was bad. Light amber, little head. Aroma is quite herbal, almost like cocktail bitters. Flavor is a match - totally dominating the beer. The unfortunate thing is that the beer flavor that did make it through was a phenolic rubbery note, possibly from the peat smoked malt, but just very unpleasant. Yuck. First really big disappointment I have had in a long while. The rest of the party was great though!

1.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Sample from Monster B’s in Stamford, CT. There’s a strong, too-long lasting menthol, peroxide aftertaste this is awful. Not a good experiment from Brooklyn Brewery.

1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
ACBF 11, from notes. Wanted to try this one after the naming controversy and the medicinal rumors. Yikes. Very light golden hue, herbal, floral, slight citrus, but reminded me of a bad gin. Palate is confusing and awkward, doesn’t taste like an ale, and has a bitter slightly menthol feel. Good try, but really not a necessary offering.
