keg, Font Bar, Mcr. Most unusual beer of the evening (22nd March). A sour rye aroma with dark rich fruit flavours & something else I can’t identify, possibly plum. Complex and not for the faint hearted!

On tap at the Fed, Durham - thanks, Abbie! Nice, rich dark brown pour with a big roiling head. Nose is pretty distinctive for a BIPA, owing presumably to the bright, pungent Kiwi hops. Hefty beer but not overpowering or sludgy. Nicely elegant, in fact, for the style, with bright fruits and leafy bitters combining nicely, with the char and molasses bits nicely muted.

12oz glass on tap at the Underground Tap and Grill pours almost black in color with a finger of off-white head that leaves a few specks of lacing as it settles. Aroma is surprisingly fruity for a dark brew with some hints of chocolate. Taste is a caramel and chocolate malty sweetness with a light citrus hoppy bitterness. Light to medium bodied with decent carbonation. Not one of the better brews from Brooklyn, was a little disappointing.

On tap at Undergound. Music is so damn loud tonight - if these are all requests then everyone stinks. Gonna crush it to get to a better beer. Pine, random citrus, chocolate, a blend of medium roast and toasty malt sniffs. Burnt malts, more toasty things, big dose of pine and gf, bit of choco, touch if burnt or charred stuff, decent sweet flavours. Plenty of pine on the aftertaste. Note to self - stop buying black IPA’s.

Keg at PO Vaults - a black, stout looking beer, sweet smelling with lovely citrus aroma. The flavour has caramel, chocolate and nice smoothness, and a citrus piney hop bite. Very dry but rounded finish.

On draught at World of Beer. Pours a dark brown color with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of roasted malt, pine and hops. Medium body with flavors of resiny hops, roast malt and a touch of citrus. The finish is malty up front with a lingering piney hops aftertaste. Pretty good Black IPA overall.

On tap at the Bulldog in Baton Rouge. Dark brown to black with an off-white head. I get a lot of pine and a light amount of citrus in the flavor and aroma. I also get a hint of roasted malt and some light hop bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

On tap at Post Office Vaults, Birmingham. Black. This is exceptionally drinkable. The hops are present, but not the biggest. But the balance is the real winner here - so so smooth, by which I mean the flavour hits the tongue from the off and remains constant. Good.

Keg at Tap East, London. Pours black with a thick, lasting, tight creamy tan cap. Nice, sturdy dark roasted malts in the nose with punches of burnt pine and grapefruit. Medium sweet flavor, pretty smooth, good roasty malts, some juicy grapefruit, nips of coconut, dark sugars. Medium bodied with fine, gentle carbonation. Moderate piney resins to finish, more well-roasted malts, light dirt, dark sugars, restrained burnt grass bitterness, some background cocoa. Great balance overall. Really smooth and cohesive.

Draft at Eulogy. Nearly opaque ruby black pour with a foamy off-white head. Dark chocolate. Coffee grounds. Cola. Vinyl. Asphalt. Truffles. Cigarettes. Burnt orange peels. Dark malt flavors largely trump the hops here. Medium-light body. Not creamy. Quite sweet but even more bitter. Some nice dark flavors but ultimately feels thin.
