On tap at Tap and Mallet. I came here for the porter but they had changed that out so I tried this. The appearance is black with a light tan head with some lacing. The The aroma is roast, burnt, chocolate. The flavor is mostly hops with some roasted chocolate. The finish is piney hops with mostly burnt roast. Not much malt.

This one poured a medium brown color with a beige head. Aroma was of medium roast, citrusy and herbal hops. Flavor was ertainly more on the stout side than IPA side, more of a moedaretly hopped stout than black ipa. A bit dirty and astringent in the swallow. Ok.

Keg at Craft Beer Rising. It pours deep brown with a medium light tan head. The nose is orange peel, tangerine, peach, roasted malt, earth and a touch of sherbet. The taste is roasted malt, toast, salted caramel, dark fruit, chocolate and orange peel with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Tasty and well-balanced.

Tap sample. Poured black color with an average frothy tan head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted malt and earthy hop aroma. Medium body with a dry texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy dark bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a good complex beer.

Keg at portculis Bristol, this is ok, bit fizzy, some coffee, not enough fresh hops. Not a great example of the style

Growler from Spirits Crossroads. Poured an okay looking almost black but more like a super super dark chestnut brown with an average sized frothy light beige head. Aroma is chocolate syrup, earth, grassy hops, wet tree bark and some yellow grapefruit. Medium bodied with slightly stronger small bubblly carbonation with a lingering bitterness on the end and a long lasting aftertaste. Flavor of burnt wet toast, bad dark chocolate, earth, yellow grapefruit rind, grassy hops. Solid beer overall.

(Draught) espresso brown, nice lacing, dark tan fine bubbles. Nose of rich chocolate malt, cola, fairly one dimensional but nice. Drinks easy too, cola, chocolate malt, light on hops, more like a brown ale.

Another blah black IPA like most in this blah style- yay +++ Sampled on draft at D’s Monroeville this beer poured a black color with ruby highlights and a large foamy beige head that left good lacing. The aroma was bitter with a strong floral hop presence and an underlying roastiness. The flavor was bitter and dryish with fruity/floral hops, roasty malts, wood and touches of pine and Windex. Long dryish roasty and bitter hop finish. Medium body. Blah.

On tap at Cincinnati Winter Beer Fest 2013. Clear dark brown color. Good lace. Chocolate, roasty toasty malts. Earthy hops. More herbal. Very interesting. Bigger body, smooth dry texture and carbonation. Bittersweet taste, some spicy herbal hops (tobaccoish ?) notes to it. Light smoke. Great stuff. Glad for the chance to have tried it. Sucker for the reference
