4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
9/20/2013 and 9/21/2013: Brooklyn There Will Be Black... Aroma: Caramel-chocolate maltiness covered by TONS of fresh, leafy hops that smell like sweetgrass, mild citrus, and calming mint. Appearance: Opaque, dark brown color with a thick mocha-colored head. Flavor: Caramelized malt and chocolate paired with a wonderful blend of hop flavors that include grass, pine, Noble spice, lemon zest, orange, and even a touch of mint; the alcohol peaks out a bit from time to time just as a reminder that it’s there, but for the most part it stays out of the way of the overall tastiness of this beer; herbally finish that’s just a touch dry. Palate: Medium to medium-full body; smooth, calm texture; goes down [far too] easily. Overall: To me, this is exactly what a Black IPA should be; it’s simply well-constructed and DELICIOUS! I love how the chocolate and coffee flavors from the dark malts blend with the from the exceptional selection of hops they used. It is so flavorful and complex, yet so approachable and modest. This beer is exactly why Brooklyn still ranks in my Top 10 favoriate breweries. Also, I love it when an embelished beer description from a brewery actually makes sense and truly nails it (although I haven’t yet independently confirmed the food pairing suggestions on my own yet), "There Will Be Black builds a hoppy dark tower on a foundation of solid British pale and crystal malts, constructs a midsection of American and German black malts and then sends a spire of New Zealand hops vaulting into the low-hanging clouds. Sharp and snappy, full-bodied but dry, There Will Be Black has a core of black bread and dark chocolate, wrapped in a bright coat of orangey, minty hops. This beer knows the night. This beer will be awesome with your burger, revelatory with your chicken molé, and intends to marry your lamb vindaloo. We think you’ll approve. Malts: British pale, lager, crystal and chocolate malt, American black barley, German black malt; Hops: American Willamette, New Zealand Pacific Gem, Motueka." Now, if I only knoew what the name was supposed to be in reference to. Is there a deeper meaning? ...Ah, I just watched the video about the season and Winter coming. Now I get it (yes, we definitely have dark Winter days here in Ohio as well!). Draught sample(s) and growler fill at Party Town in Florence, KY. Rating #89 for this beer.

Had this wonderful beer at a Brooklyn beer dinner at Mohawk House in NJ last year. Was happy Garret Oliver chose to bring it with him. The only bad thing was it was keg only. :(

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at 2SP. Pours a clear deep brown color with a frothy half inch tan head that lingers. Aroma has resin, pine, citrus, and chocolate, that add complexity to the roasted malt backbone. Some bitter pine notes come first with bakers chocolate and mild roast mid-palate. A little bit of dark fruit and toffee emerge as the beer warms. The finish is bitter pine and grassy hops with a touch of mint and an underlying mild roast. Medium body, creamy, with low carbonation.

Keg@beer emporium, Bristol
Fantastic dank, piney citrus nose off of this beer. Dark brown black and tight foamy white head. Obliterates the taste buds, when they wake up again a melange of pine forest, muddled berries, mango pith but plenty of balancing chocolate sweetness so as to not be overwhelming. No roasty notes in sight, properly made well executed BIPA.
