3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a clear dark red color. The head is only a finger high, and cream colored. It’s texture and retention isn’t the best, nor is much lacing left behind.
S: At first, there seems to be a suggestion of light spiciness. This quickly gives way to strong caramel notes, backed by the subtlest smokiness. There is enough here to make me enjoy the aroma, but not enough to blow me away.
T: It opens up with a very light spiciness - it’s more of a suggestion than an actual note, to be fair. The caramel here is handled very deftly, gradually building in intensity without going overboard. In fact, a lot of the notes here seem to be subtle rather than bludgeoning - still, they’re defined enough to be prevalent to my scorched Earth of a plate.
M: I really like how clean and crisp this is. Despite the sweet flavor, it’s well attenuated and dryish finishing. Despite that, it’s quite soft and creamy. The carbonation is rather soft, and fits well with its feel.
O: This one is pretty damn tasty. I’d even suggest it exceeded my expectations. This is one I’d certainly drink again, if not buy by the 6-pack.

Transfer from BA review on 1-3-13-
Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – Served an orange amber colored brew with a tiny off white head. The head fades almost instantaneously to leave only the tiniest amount of lacing.
Smell – The aroma is sweet and roasted. The sweet is a nice mix of dark fruit and some caramel smells. There is a light spice and nutty aroma as well which mixes with the rest to round out the smell.
Taste – The taste begins with a sweet fruit flavor of some plum as well as a light bready and caramel sweetness. As the flavors advance light spice and nutty flavors come to the tongue. Toward the end cherry flavors enter and seem to get even stronger as time advances. These favors combined with some slight spice flavors as well as an orange peel and earthy hop taste. Together these mixes of flavors take the taste to its end where a pleasant malty and fruity flavor is left to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the just above average in its creaminess for 6.1 % abv with a carbonation level that is rather average. The slightly thicker body gives all the malt a nutty flavors time to linger on the tongue, while the medium carbonation makes it more drinkable and is nice for the fruitier flavors of the brew. Pretty well done.
Overall – A quite sweet and malty winter ale. Nice and easy drinking with lots of flavor.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
The body has good clarity and a deep reddish amber color. On top is a light off white which rises up about two fingers tall before slowly fading down to a thin cap. This thin covering hangs on well and leaves some slick lacing on the glass. It has a fairly light nose with nice notes of bready, doughy and lightly toasted malt. Hop aroma also adds a light spicy note as well. The flavor has a good sweet bready and ginger bread cookie like maltiness with light caramel notes. Hop flavor is modest and adds light leafy spicy bitterness to just give some balance to the finish. The palate has a solid medium feel with soft yet active carbonation.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
"BB March 2014," so I’ve caught this at a reasonable time. Bustling fizzy head that shrinks away, leaving a brown malt body that looks like a Newcastle. Toasty malt smell, too. The taste strides the line between a Newkie and a full on Scotch ale, but more dependent on malts and without the occasional smoked peat, or the phenol that sometimes comes with it. A sturdy, full-on cool weather beer, as far as I can tell in my current hot, humid condition.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 3/2014. Pours fairly crystal clear ruby red color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, biscuit, raisin, plum, apple, molasses, brown sugar, light roast, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, biscuit, raisin, plum, apple, molasses, brown sugar, light roast, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, biscuit, raisin, plum, apple, molasses, brown sugar, light roast, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a nice malt/yeast balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice Scottish ale. Good balance and robustness of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Rated on 01-31-2014 (Bottle labeled best before April 2014) This beer has a small creamy, smooth ivory head that mostly diminishes, transparent orange body with fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is malty, toasty, caramel, rich, fruity, and spicy. The taste is malty, spicy, caramel, rich, earthy, and toasty. The mouthfeel is lively and this beer is medium bodied. This beer is quaffable, malt upfront in aroma and flavor and a beer I would drink again.
