We brew Brooklyn Winter Ale from heirloom Maris Otter malts to create a beer with roots in blustery Scotland. Brooklyn Winter Ale is richly malty, aromatic, full-bodied and perfect with stews, roasts and holiday dishes.

300 mL. Pours a clear dark amber with almost no head and no lacing. No carbonation. Aroma is of a Scotch ale- Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, caramel malt. Taste is watery and dry with some wood notes, faint caramel, slight dry hops. Finish is seltzer water. Disappointing.

This brew is a mostly clear deep mahogany color with a medium and creamy off-white head that dissipates slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of toasted malt, caramel and fruit. Medium body with flavors of malt, brown sugar and caramel, plus some soft fruit. The finish is malty with a hint of hops and spice aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle. Dark brown and red with a thin head. Aromas are weetabix and citrus with floral notes. Chocolate with some herbal notes. Flavours are sweet chocolate and weetabix malts with citrus and raisins. Quite plummy and fruity on the finish. A decent winter brew.

Bottle. Brown body with small tan head and a little bit of lacing. Modest malty aroma with light caramel malt and a tangy malt note. Flavour is similarly malty with a distinct biscuity malt that I associate with the Marris Otter malt. Very light caramel notes, light bitterness in the finish keeps it from becoming cloying. Pleasant but straightforward brew. Bit light to be called a scotch ale in my opinion. Courtesy of HogTownHarry.

Draft from DRE. Medium brown pour with aroma of caramelly malt, some brown sugar, nutmeg, hops. Tastes caramel malty coupled with slight brown sugar and X-mas spicy notes, and a twinge of finishing hops.

Bottle. Pours with a nice and fluffy, just off-white head and a clear chestnut-amber hued body. Aroma is fruity (darker fruits, plums) and decently estery, with notes of brown sugar, caramel and leather. A little bit of spiced cake too. Taste is a bit bitter up front followed with fruit, caramel and straw. Medium to sharp bubbles. Somewhat light bodied for the alcohol. Good.

Bottle from Bitter Virtue, Southampton, purchased and consumed 17-01-10 Colour is edging towards copper a bit of a head but never lasted long enough for me to take any further detail. Some chewiness and there is caramel amongst the spicefest, touch nutty and malty. Its fine. A6 A4 F7 P3 Ov13 3.3

Tap at the brewery, 17/12/11. Mahogany with a thin cream lid. Light vegetal matter, nuttiness, Minstrels aroma. Alcohol showing; weak squashy dried fruits, fig. Dab of walnut-like oiliness, fizzed up. Slight and pleasant....but more significantly, I have finally, unknowingly netted the Nessie of beer styles- A SCOTTISH ALE!!! Seriously, WTF? If this is a Scottish I’ve tasted thousands.
