Overall it's pretty sweet, with a toasty dark character to it. Minimal hop bitterness, just a touch for balance. Tastes a bit lagerish to my tongue. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 3/2014. Pours fairly crystal clear ruby red color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, biscuit, raisin, plum, apple, molasses, brown sugar, light roast, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, biscuit, raisin, plum, apple, molasses, brown sugar, light roast, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, biscuit, raisin, plum, apple, molasses, brown sugar, light roast, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a nice malt/yeast balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice Scottish ale. Good balance and robustness of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Rated on 01-31-2014 (Bottle labeled best before April 2014) This beer has a small creamy, smooth ivory head that mostly diminishes, transparent orange body with fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is malty, toasty, caramel, rich, fruity, and spicy. The taste is malty, spicy, caramel, rich, earthy, and toasty. The mouthfeel is lively and this beer is medium bodied. This beer is quaffable, malt upfront in aroma and flavor and a beer I would drink again.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a clear dark red color. The head is only a finger high, and cream colored. It’s texture and retention isn’t the best, nor is much lacing left behind. S: At first, there seems to be a suggestion of light spiciness. This quickly gives way to strong caramel notes, backed by the subtlest smokiness. There is enough here to make me enjoy the aroma, but not enough to blow me away. T: It opens up with a very light spiciness - it’s more of a suggestion than an actual note, to be fair. The caramel here is handled very deftly, gradually building in intensity without going overboard. In fact, a lot of the notes here seem to be subtle rather than bludgeoning - still, they’re defined enough to be prevalent to my scorched Earth of a plate. M: I really like how clean and crisp this is. Despite the sweet flavor, it’s well attenuated and dryish finishing. Despite that, it’s quite soft and creamy. The carbonation is rather soft, and fits well with its feel. O: This one is pretty damn tasty. I’d even suggest it exceeded my expectations. This is one I’d certainly drink again, if not buy by the 6-pack.
