Commercial Description:
In German, Munich is "Munchen", or "place of the monks." While Belgium is now better known for monastic brewing, many of Germany's great breweries have monastic origins. During the forty days of Lent leading up to Easter, the monks fasted, allowing themselves no solid food. They developed doppelbock, a beer style solid enough to get them through their fasting period. Names for German doppelbocks always use the suffix "-ator", so we've followed suit. Brooklynator Doppelbock is brewed in the classic style, often referred to as "liquid bread." It's brewed from 100% German malts and hops and fermented cold with a Bavarian lager yeast. It has a bready, toffee-like aroma, crisp, moderate bitterness, a silky slightly sweet center and a long bready finish. The monks fasted, but you don't have to. Brooklynator Doppelbock is great with pork dishes, venison, duck, sausages, earthy beans, mushrooms, and full-flavored cheeses.

Objectively speaking: Excellent strong dark lager from Brooklyn.
I like: More fruitiness than most with dates and figs complexity on top of juicy blackberries. Juicy and toasty at the same time and not without a whisper of smoky roast. Clean and rich. Satisfying round, yet well carbonated body.
I dislike: There is not much I dislike in this one. It’s just a very well-done, beefier, darker, bolder doppelbock and hard to get tired of.

Draught. Pours a deep dark ruby reddish color with a thin white head. Aroma is very thick with tons of dark caramelized german malts- lots of sharp dark munich, with some fruitiness as well- figs, raisin, and other dried fruits. Good clean malt profile, doesnt have that big toasted bready malt profile, but rather goes a bit darker and is more caramelized nd sharp malts, with some leather, earth and wierd astringency at the end. Pretty good overall, yet different from many traditional german doppelbocks.

Sampled on tap at Great Lost Bear. Pours a clear brown color with a ring of light brown lace. Aroma of fruits and malt, there’s also a little something weird and unpleasant. Flavor of fruits, chocolate and malt. The body is light with an oily texture and moderate carbonation.

Odd tangy fruit aroma. Dark amber color with a light brown head. Sweet in the beginning with a sweet belgian yeast taste. slightly creamy palate.

Growler. Deep mahogony, clear, decent head and lace. Dark, bready, malty nose, hint of caramel and spice. Medium bodied at best, smooth malty flavors, sweet and bready, nice spicy, dry hoppy bite at the end. Well constructed brew, a bit subdued, could have more richness but not a bad gal to spend the night with, hell you might even stick around for breakfast....

Draft from Tank’s Taproom. Very sweet almost too sweet for me. Not a very pronounced malt presence although it was a decent beer. Mostly caramel taste and smell. No dark roast aroma or flavor. Maybe a hint of chocolate.
