Commercial Description:
In German, Munich is "Munchen", or "place of the monks." While Belgium is now better known for monastic brewing, many of Germany's great breweries have monastic origins. During the forty days of Lent leading up to Easter, the monks fasted, allowing themselves no solid food. They developed doppelbock, a beer style solid enough to get them through their fasting period. Names for German doppelbocks always use the suffix "-ator", so we've followed suit. Brooklynator Doppelbock is brewed in the classic style, often referred to as "liquid bread." It's brewed from 100% German malts and hops and fermented cold with a Bavarian lager yeast. It has a bready, toffee-like aroma, crisp, moderate bitterness, a silky slightly sweet center and a long bready finish. The monks fasted, but you don't have to. Brooklynator Doppelbock is great with pork dishes, venison, duck, sausages, earthy beans, mushrooms, and full-flavored cheeses.

Draft - Brown beer with very thin tan head. This beer was too sweet and thin. There are some nice chocolate and raisen flavors, but that are not nearly prominent enough.

Darker brown with a grainy-sweet aroma. Flavor is very grainy with some light sugar and caramel. Really bland and below average for the style.

On tap. Poured a deeper orangish/brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of toffee, nuts, with some light chocoloate and roastiness. Tastes of toffee, caramel, light chocolate, and all around malty. Light lacing left on the glass. Alcohol content well hidden.

En fût. Pinte dégustée chez Great Lost Bear (Portland, ME). (Rating #1699)

My Bottom Line:
Earthy, leafy hoppiness spices up the bready caramel maltiness of this clean and perhaps too lean Doppelbock.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the clear mahogany.
-For a doppelbock, this drinks like a regular Dunkler Bock.
-The aroma has some quirky notes which aren’t that appealing.
-The body is silky and well rounded, yet does not create the comfort and wealth I associate with the style.
-The bready finish is pleasant, but not compelling enough to have me quickly return for another sip.

On tap at The Great Lost Bear, ME.
