Commercial Description:
In German, Munich is "Munchen", or "place of the monks." While Belgium is now better known for monastic brewing, many of Germany's great breweries have monastic origins. During the forty days of Lent leading up to Easter, the monks fasted, allowing themselves no solid food. They developed doppelbock, a beer style solid enough to get them through their fasting period. Names for German doppelbocks always use the suffix "-ator", so we've followed suit. Brooklynator Doppelbock is brewed in the classic style, often referred to as "liquid bread." It's brewed from 100% German malts and hops and fermented cold with a Bavarian lager yeast. It has a bready, toffee-like aroma, crisp, moderate bitterness, a silky slightly sweet center and a long bready finish. The monks fasted, but you don't have to. Brooklynator Doppelbock is great with pork dishes, venison, duck, sausages, earthy beans, mushrooms, and full-flavored cheeses.

On tap for a few months now at cb six. Very dark amber color with a sweet, earthy nose, hints of cocoa, plum... bread pudding. a delicious beer. crisp in taste with a sweet malty follow-up. The hops are secondary in this beer as they should be lending crispness and structure to the "silky slightly sweet center." I’m very pleased with this beer.

On tap at The Deli - State College, PA. Fusel and grain nose. Gross. Way too much goaty grain and rotting earth. Ick. Pours a pale mahogany, with bronze edge and rim in silky tan. Flavor is a mess. A lot of sugar, some nutty maltiness, and more fusels. Fermentation didn’t go well. Texture is nice and creamy, but there’s a bit of butter. Alcohols are forward. Grains. Sweetness. Alcohol. Meh. Faint hop background. Underwhelming.

On draft at Oldsmar Tap House. Served up in a stem glass. Very dark with a nice creamy head. Flavors were extremely good with a balance of malts, chocolate, and even toffee.

On tap at Pizza Plant. Smell the malt, see the dark brown. Sweet, carmel, but mellows. Mocha head, lace. Fresh. Above average carbonation. Easy drinking, some hop at end. Clean crisp finish.

(draft) Small beige head atop crystal clear mahogany body. Aroma is moderately sweet, raisin, caramel, some cinnamon/anise. Taste is sweet, caramel, raisin, chocolate, light cinnamon, alcohol warming. Smooth, low carbonation, medium-full body, some stickiness.

Draught at Circa 5/2/08. First impression to the palate is huge malty sweetness, but as it warmed, the hotness came out. I wouldn’t mind having this as my only food during a fast.

On tap at RFD’s in Washington, DC. Pours a dark brown color with a moderate white head and decent lacing. A wonderfully complex aroma, with scents of toasted malt, bread and a hint of banana for sweetness. The flavor is similar, with bready malt and a light sweetness coming through. The only downside is that the alcohol is a little overpowering in the aftertaste. Overall a solid beer.

On tap at Tyler’s, Durham. Deep brown pour with a decent head. Very lively carbonation and a bountiful aroma of nutty malts and a lot of hops. I was honestly a bit surprised by how crisp and hoppy this was, as it cut against the style just a bit. But there are certainly some bready malts in there, even if it’s not quite as complex as you’d expect. Another solid seasonal from Brooklyn.
